Wrexham Stuns with Dramatic Last-Minute Heroics to Secure Carabao Cup Progression

A dramatic two-goal burst from Ollie Palmer in the span of two minutes rescued Wrexham's Carabao Cup campaign as the Red Dragons orchestrated a remarkable comeback triumph against Hull City.

Phil Parkinson's squad has endured a turbulent period recently. The Welsh side experienced a crushing setback in their inaugural EFL Championship fixture in over four decades this past weekend, surrendering two crucial late strikes to Southampton in a match they were positioned to secure.

The Red Dragons found themselves facing another potential defeat merely three days afterward, this time in Carabao Cup action. Despite taking an early 1-0 advantage, Wrexham allowed Hull City to respond with three consecutive goals.

When the contest appeared beyond salvage for Wales' most historic football club, Palmer delivered a masterclass performance. The veteran striker, aged 33, nodded home his opening strike of the evening in the 91st minute, reducing Hull City's lead to a single goal during added time.

Within 60 seconds of his first effort, James McClean provided a perfectly weighted delivery into the penalty area, with Palmer once again rising to meet it. The forward netted an almost carbon-copy header to level the scoreline for Wrexham, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.

The supporters filling the STōK Cae Ras held their collective breath as both teams stepped up for the decisive spot-kicks. Joel Ndala failed to find the target for the away side, while McClean, Elliot Lee, Josh Windass and Palmer all found the net for Wrexham, establishing a 4-3 advantage in the penalty competition.

Jack Marriott served as the fifth and decisive penalty taker from twelve yards, with the English player confidently dispatching Wrexham into the Carabao Cup's Second Round.

While a 3-3 stalemate followed by a 5-3 penalty triumph hardly represents Wrexham's finest display, their sole focus remains advancing in the Carabao Cup competition.

The club now shifts focus toward securing their maiden points of the 2025-26 campaign. Wrexham host West Brom at the STōK Cae Ras this Saturday, Aug. 16.
