Wrexham Surge Closer to Securing Transformative New Training Ground

Wrexham have lodged a planning application for the construction of a men's first-team facility at Colliers Park.

The Red Dragons currently operate out of Colliers Park, a training complex owned by Wrexham University and managed under a long-term lease by the Football Association of Wales as the National Football Development Centre.

Currently, Wrexham's men's first team uses the site exclusively for training sessions and must travel back to the Racecourse Ground for gym sessions, injury recovery, changing rooms, and meals. The proposal outlines plans for a purpose-built Training Pavilion that would create a fully self-contained training environment all on one site.

An official club statement issued on Monday confirmed that, "Following the conclusion of a month-long consultation period, the planning application has now been submitted for the installation of the men's first-team building at Colliers Park for review by Wrexham Council."

Installation work on the modular units is expected to get underway later this week, with the Red Dragons targeting the 2026–27 season for the new facility to be up and running.

While this proposed development marks a notable step forward, Wrexham remain firmly focused on constructing their own dedicated training ground. That said, club officials acknowledge the process could take as long as five years to complete.

The club must not only locate suitable land capable of housing facilities that align with its Premier League aspirations, but also carry out a series of feasibility studies and assessments before any construction work can commence.

Colliers Park previously served as Wrexham's training base and was constructed in 1997 at a cost of around $1 million. It was widely considered one of the finest facilities outside the Premier League and was even utilized by Barcelona during their trips to England for European fixtures.

Faced with financial hardship, the Red Dragons sold both their training ground and stadium to Wrexham University in 2011, though they retained the right to use the facilities for an annual fee. Wrexham subsequently signed a new 99-year lease on the Racecourse Ground in 2016 before buying back the stadium outright in June 2022.

The planning application will afford Wrexham greater operational flexibility at Colliers Park, though it does nothing to diminish the club's long-term goal of developing a tailor-made training facility for use across the entire organization.

"The training facilities are clearly an important issue," Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson said. "However, it's also a complex one where we have to source land. We've been exploring various parcels of land, but once you identify a site, you need to carry out soil samples, master planning, and feasibility studies.

"And ultimately, if you find something suitable, you need to reach an agreement, purchase it, or secure a long-term lease. Then you have to navigate the entire development process. This is going to be a three-to-five-year journey to create a training facility that matches both where we want to be and where we need to be.

"So in the meantime, we have Colliers. There are two excellent pitches there that we have access to right now. We worked with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) to help invest in the second pitch, so they now have two stitched pitches there, and we have a stitched pitch here at the Racecourse. All three share the same playing surface.

"We're in discussions with the FAW about how we can make better use of Colliers Park in the short term. And when I say short term, I mean the next three to five years, to ensure we can meet the demands of what we would expect from a Championship-level squad."
