Preston North End boss Paul Heckingbottom has publicly blasted his own club captain Ben Whiteman for "crossing a line" by attempting to engineer a transfer to Wrexham during the ongoing summer window.
The 30-year-old has emerged as a target for manager Phil Parkinson as he seeks to bolster his midfield options ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign. The Red Dragons are looking to bring in an additional central midfielder to compete with Matty James and Ben Sheaf, with Whiteman considered one of their top priorities.
Sources suggest Whiteman has become increasingly frustrated with what he perceives as Preston's lack of ambition this summer, as the club gears up for a 12th straight season in the Championship. The Lilywhites have brought in Alfie Devine from Tottenham Hotspur in a club-record deal valued at $8 million, while goalkeeper Lee Nicholls has also joined from Huddersfield Town.
Wrexham had also shown interest in Swansea City midfielder Ethan Galbraith before he opted to join Stoke City, while West Bromwich Albion's Jayson Molumby continues to be monitored as another potential option.
For Whiteman's benefit, he will be hoping a transfer to the Racecourse Ground comes to fruition, as his time at Preston now appears to be at an end following his omission from Saturday's preseason loss to Stockport County.
Whiteman 'Trying to Force' Wrexham Move
Speaking in the aftermath of the friendly fixture, Heckingbottom took aim at the veteran midfielder's approach to the situation.
"Ben informed me and Peter [Ridsdale, CEO] that he's played his final game for the club," Heckingbottom said on BBC Radio Lancashire.
"He's attempting to force a transfer, which is a problem for me and for the squad. We've had ongoing conversations over the past few days, and Ben was well aware of the boundary I didn't want him to cross. Regrettably, he has, and that simply cannot be tolerated.
"My focus now is on the players who are present and those who genuinely want to play for this club. Craig [Hemmings, owner] will have a problem with that too, as will Peter, since they're the ones covering the wages."
Whiteman Valuation Threatens 'Sticky Situation'
"Look, there's a price tag on him. I just hope, for Ben's sake, that Wrexham are prepared to meet it," Heckingbottom continued. "Otherwise, he's placed himself in a very difficult position."
The exact fee Preston are seeking remains unclear, and it is yet to be determined whether Wrexham will be willing to meet that asking price. Regardless, Whiteman's current manager has little motivation to hasten his captain's departure.
"I'm not concerned anymore," Heckingbottom said when pressed on whether a swift resolution would benefit all parties. "He's made his choice. I'm not fussed, as long as I can bring in a replacement."
