Wrexham Unveil Ambitious Summer Transfer Strategy With Exciting Moves On The Horizon

Phil Parkinson says he has already pinpointed his summer transfer targets as Wrexham await their first signing of the transfer window.

The Red Dragons are not anticipated to have any new faces in the squad when they take on Wisła Kraków in their opening preseason friendly this weekend, signaling a relatively subdued start to the window.

Wrexham let go of six senior players after their contracts ran out last month and also parted ways with triple-promotion stalwarts Paul Mullin and Tom O'Connor, with both having their deals terminated.

That leaves Wrexham with 31 senior players under contract ahead of any new arrivals, despite only being permitted to register a 25-man Championship squad. While there is pressure to reduce the roster, Parkinson insists he remains relaxed about potential exits, with his main focus on preparing the current group for the season ahead.

Signing Players 'Not an Exact Science'

"We are working on both simultaneously, but I think our supporters can see if they do the math that there are more players here than we can accommodate in a squad right now," Parkinson told The Leader. "We are in no great rush at the moment to move people on.

"In terms of where we stand with recruitment, we know who we'd like to bring in and we've identified the targets for those positions. But we are focused on working with the group we have and getting everyone into the best possible shape. Any additions we make along the way will be aimed at strengthening the squad going forward.

"It's still early days, and it's not an exact science when it comes to making new signings. We just have to do what we've always done — be really thorough in our research on every player we bring to the club.

"Anyone who comes here has to fit what we're looking for in terms of personality, character, and ability, while also integrating well into the existing group."

The Welsh club brought in 13 players following their return to the Championship last year, but they head into this summer from a considerably stronger position and are expected to make just four or five additions to bolster their bid for promotion to the Premier League.

What Are the Championship Squad Rules?

Wrexham celebrate against Nottingham Forest.

Wrexham must adhere to Championship squad regulations as they map out their summer transfer business.

Every club in the division must register a maximum squad of 25 players aged over 21, of whom eight must be "homegrown" and two must be goalkeepers. Players under the age of 21 do not need to be registered, though every loan signing must be registered regardless of age. This means Wrexham does not need to register youngsters Bailey Cadamarteri, Harry Ashfield, or Aaron James in order to field them next season.

A homegrown player is defined as any player who has been registered with a club affiliated with either The Football Association (FA) or the Football Association of Wales (FAW) for three complete seasons (or 36 months) before their 21st birthday, or before the end of the season in which they turn 21.

Wrexham can field as many different players as they wish during the first month of the season, before their squad list must be submitted upon the closure of the summer transfer window at 11 p.m. BST (6 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. PT) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
