Wrexham Unveils Stunning Vision for Ambitious $95 Million Kop Stand Transformation

Fresh renderings have been released offering a glimpse of what Wrexham's $95 million Kop Stand will look like upon completion.

Construction on the 7,500-seat stand got underway in 2025, with work originally anticipated to wrap up next year. The new Kop Stand will return the Racecourse Ground to a fully enclosed four-sided stadium and push the total capacity to just above 18,000.

The Red Dragons first announced plans for the new stand as part of the Wrexham Gateway project in 2022, before the development was held back by a series of unexpected planning and funding complications.

As those setbacks accumulated, the club filed a revised planning application last summer to incorporate an extra 2,250 seats into the design. The updated proposal would boost the stand's capacity from 5,500 to 7,750 seats, with the Welsh club keen to make the most of this rare opportunity to deliver a landmark new Kop Stand.

What Wrexham's New $95 Million Kop Stand Will Look Like

Wrexham first unveiled the design for the new Kop Stand in February 2025, and the latest images now offer a more detailed look at what the finished structure could resemble.

The original design, crafted by renowned sports and entertainment architecture firm Populous, featured a safe-standing section, hospitality facilities, and accessible seating. The most striking element of the design is the external brick facade, which draws inspiration from the historic Ruabon red brick native to the surrounding area.

Wrexham aims to build a stand deeply rooted in the city's history and heritage, incorporating a replica of the sister wheel of the Gresford Colliery wheel as a tribute to the miners who lost their lives in the 1934 mining disaster, along with a statue honoring club legend Joey Jones.

Regarding the stadium's interior, images published as part of the Planning Officer Guide Document this week feature 3D renderings of the proposed Kop Stand and its anticipated appearance once complete.

The renderings highlight the impressive scale of the new stand, which appears to be at least twice the height of any existing stands and even taller than the nearby university accommodation blocks.

The visuals also reveal an updated seating layout across the two-tier structure. The bulk of the seating is concentrated on the expansive lower tier, with a smaller upper tier above.

There also appears to be a modification to the stand's exterior. While early renderings depicted a bronze finish on the facade, the newest images reveal a polycarbonate facade that will lend a lighter, brighter aesthetic to the new Kop Stand.

When Will the Wrexham Kop Stand Open?

Wrexham had originally hoped to have the new Kop Stand ready this summer, with aspirations for it to be operational ahead of the Under-19 European Championship in 2026.

The total cost of the stand is projected to reach approximately $95 million, with Wrexham contributing $67.62 million. The Red Dragons have already secured a contentious $23.46 million grant from the Welsh government to help satisfy the UEFA Category 4 requirements necessary to bring competitive men's international fixtures back to Wrexham.

Time is also a factor. While the club had hoped to have the Kop Stand ready during the 2026–27 Championship season, co-chairman Rob Mac has confirmed it is now expected to be completed in time for the 2027–28 season.

"I am going to say this publicly, just because it is easier once you say it publicly," he told Collider Interviews. "It is going to be ready for the start of the 2027–28 season. It is going to be open for business, and that means butts in seats. Not next season, but the season after that. There will be people sitting in the seats, watching football."

Ryan Reynolds added: "This man makes things happen. If you tell Rob something impossible, you watch his pupils suddenly dilate and something happens internally."
