Wrexham's Championship Journey Revealed: Where They Stand After 45 Thrilling Games

Wrexham continue to occupy sixth place in the EFL Championship table as the final matchday of the regular season approaches next week.

Phil Parkinson's men held onto the last playoff spot despite suffering a 3–1 defeat to title winners Coventry City on their trophy-lifting occasion. The Sky Blues beat Wrexham at the CBS Arena on Sunday, the same day they were crowned Championship champions.

The loss leaves Wrexham level on points with Hull City going into the final day, and one point clear of Derby County in the fight for the last playoff berth. Coventry are among two clubs set to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League, with the sides finishing between third and sixth competing for the remaining promotion place in the end-of-season playoffs.

There is still a great deal at stake heading into the final round of EFL Championship fixtures next weekend.

Coventry City have already clinched the league title with a remarkable 92 points, while four clubs remain in contention for the second automatic promotion spot. Ipswich Town currently hold second place ahead of a crucial midweek encounter against fifth-placed Southampton.

Millwall and Middlesbrough are also pushing to claim second, while Southampton could close to within a point of the automatic promotion places with a victory over Ipswich in their upcoming fixture.

Wrexham, Hull City, and Derby County are all vying for the final playoff position, with the outcome to be settled on the last day of the season. The Red Dragons enter the final matchday in sixth but face a stern challenge at home against promotion-hunting Boro, while Hull host Norwich City and Derby welcome Sheffield United.

What Wrexham Need from Remaining Championship Fixture

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson

The situation is straightforward enough for Wrexham as they prepare for their final Championship outing.

Phil Parkinson's squad know that a victory is essential if they want to control their own fate on the last day, though they must achieve it against fourth-placed Middlesbrough. The Red Dragons sit sixth, level on points with Hull City but boasting a goal difference three goals superior.

Derby County are also in contention for sixth and go into the final day one point adrift of both Wrexham and Hull. The Rams know their only route into the playoff positions requires them to better the results of both Wrexham and Hull. They hold a superior goal difference to the two sides above them, meaning even a point could suffice should both Wrexham and Hull City fall to defeat.

Given the complex permutations involving all three clubs, Wrexham could beat Middlesbrough and still be edged out on goal difference if Hull thrash Sheffield United. Conversely, they could also fall to defeat on the final day and still secure sixth place if both Hull and Derby also lose at home.
