Wrexham's Must-Have Summer Signings to Keep Their Momentum Alive

Wrexham will head to the United States on Wednesday for the final three games of their preseason tour.

Phil Parkinson's squad has already drawn against Wisła Kraków and beaten Manchester United this summer as they build toward improving on last season's seventh-place Championship finish.

The Red Dragons are looking to bolster their roster but have yet to complete a signing, with 31 senior players still under contract. Wrexham can only register 25 senior players for the Championship campaign and are aware that several exits will be necessary before any notable additions can be made ahead of the transfer deadline.

Here's an overview of the business Wrexham are still anticipated to conduct this summer across every position.

Goalkeepers

Wrexham continue to search for a goalkeeper amid doubts over the quality of their current options. Arthur Okonkwo and Danny Ward are both competent Championship-level keepers, but neither is widely considered among the division's best.

The Red Dragons are among a number of clubs tracking Sunderland backup Anthony Patterson. The goalkeeper position is one Wrexham would like to address, though it is not the club's top priority. A deal will only be pursued if a primary target becomes available at an acceptable fee.

For the time being, both Okonkwo and Ward are expected to stay at the Racecourse Ground, though there is a possibility one could depart before the transfer deadline should a new goalkeeper arrive. Both players are entering the final year of their deals.

Defenders

Despite already possessing considerable depth at center back, Parkinson would still welcome another defensive addition if the right opportunity presents itself.

Even after recording the club's worst defensive numbers since their relegation from the Football League in 2008, Wrexham believe they have a solid defensive unit and will only target a player capable of genuinely raising the bar.

Fiorentina defender Matías Moreno has been strongly linked with a switch to North Wales, while Leicester City's Harry Souttar also remains on their radar. Either arrival would significantly intensify competition for starting spots and likely signal the exit of one of the club's current defenders.

Conor Coady is anticipated to depart on another loan, with his substantial wages making a permanent transfer unlikely. Promotion hero Dan Scarr could also move on, while academy product Aaron James is expected to head out on loan for the season.

Wingbacks

Wingback remains Wrexham's top priority heading into this summer.

The Red Dragons opted against pursuing a permanent deal for Issa Kaboré after his loan stint from Manchester City, leaving a clear lack of cover on the right flank.

Recruiting a right wingback is a must. Ryan Longman is expected to stay as a flexible backup, while three-time promotion winner Ryan Barnett looks likely to move on. Wrexham maintain their long-held interest in Portsmouth's Terry Devlin but are continuing to evaluate several other options.

The left side is less straightforward. Liberato Cacace managed only 13 appearances due to injury last season but demonstrated his quality whenever available. If Wrexham are confident in his fitness, George Thomason offers reliable cover. However, depending solely on Cacace's availability could be a risk for a side targeting promotion to the Premier League.

Midfield

Central midfield looks to be one of Wrexham's strongest departments, making a further signing unlikely unless an outstanding opportunity emerges.

The club was among several sides interested in Swansea City's Ethan Galbraith but ultimately concluded that his $13.45 million asking price—which eventually took him to Stoke City—was poor value and would have broken Wrexham's transfer record.

Lewis O'Brien's standout performance in a deeper role against Manchester United at the weekend offered another viable solution. He could feature regularly alongside either Matty James or Ben Sheaf in the holding midfield role, with both George Dobson and Ollie Rathbone serving as experienced depth options.

Thomason, Callum Doyle and Zak Vyner also have the ability to operate in midfield when needed, further lessening the urgency for another signing.

Attack

Wrexham are still expected to add firepower in attack before the transfer window shuts.

Sam Smith looks set to start the season as Parkinson's preferred striker, with Kieffer Moore offering an alternative threat up front. Both performed well last season, but Wrexham would still like to bring in another proven Championship goalscorer.

The Red Dragons have recently been connected with free-agent Senegal international Bamba Dieng following his exit from FC Lorient. Given the club's current attacking options, any move may come later in the window if the right chance arises.

Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead are expected to be Parkinson's preferred attacking midfield duo, while Davis Keillor-Dunn's future remains unclear amid ongoing transfer speculation.

Bailey Cadamarteri qualifies as an U-21 player and does not need to be registered for Championship competition, making him an ideal additional squad option.

Paul Mullin has already left the club, while Mo Faal has departed on loan. Wrexham are also expected to cancel Elliot Lee's contract, and Ryan Hardie is free to seek a new club this summer.
