Xabi Alonso Admits His Blunder Handed Arsenal the Victory Over Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that midfielder Moisés Caicedo was unavailable for Sunday's loss against Arsenal, following a decision to rush the Ecuadorian back from injury prematurely the week before.

Caicedo sustained what Alonso referred to simply as a "setback" ahead of the season-opening win over Fulham. He was brought back into action the following week against Brighton & Hove Albion, but lasted only 14 minutes before being withdrawn due to a clear fitness issue.

Having worsened the problem, Caicedo was ruled out on Sunday as a Chelsea midfield depleted of options was dismantled by Arsenal—despite the 2–1 final score implying the contest was tighter than it actually appeared.

When asked if Caicedo's injury could become a prolonged concern, Alonso reassured supporters there was no need for alarm, while acknowledging that the player had been brought back too hastily and that patience was now required.

"No, not a long-term issue, but it's a matter of managing the risk," he said. "We probably brought him back too soon last week and I don't want to repeat that error."
