Xabi Alonso Delivers Stern Message to Real Madrid Stars Mbappe and Vinicius: "Must Step Up"

Real Madrid's new manager Xabi Alonso has issued a clear message to star forwards Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, emphasizing that neglecting defensive responsibilities will not be acceptable during his tenure.
The acquisition of Mbappé as a free agent during the previous summer transfer window led to criticism regarding the team's defensive structure, with several high-profile players being criticized for their lack of defensive contribution in Carlo Ancelotti's final season as manager.
Alonso has made it clear that such approach will not be permitted under his leadership, stating that every player will be evaluated based on their performance both in possession and out of possession.
"Every single player must participate in defensive duties - all 11 players on the pitch need to be engaged," Alonso stated during a media briefing. "They must understand our pressing philosophy, everyone is included in this - Vini, Jude [Bellingham], Fede [Valverde], Kylian.

"Our defensive line needs to maintain a high position, and the more compact we remain in terms of spacing, the more effective we become. This is an area requiring improvement. We're actively working on this aspect, including with Vini."
Regarding player mentality, Alonso was also questioned about the situation of another Madrid attacker, Rodrygo. The Brazilian remained on the bench throughout their recent match, leading to speculation that lingering doubts about his future from last season had frustrated the new manager.
"His demeanor appears positive and motivated," Alonso commented on Rodrygo's behavior. "The recent decision [against Pachuca] was purely tactical, but he remains a crucial player. He possesses unique qualities. I believe he will have a significant role in the Club World Cup.
"I have complete confidence in the entire squad and I'm relying on every player. They are all exceptional talents, and the campaign ahead is extremely challenging. We need a well-balanced roster with constructive competition. We're facing 50 to 60 fixtures."
