Xabi Alonso Delivers Verdict on Mbappe's Super Cup Comeback Prospects
Real Madrid will make every effort to ensure Kylian Mbappé recovers from his knee problem in time for the Spanish Super Cup, coach Xabi Alonso has stated.
Mbappé has been dealing with a knee issue for multiple weeks and received an official diagnosis of ligament damage in late December, with a three-week recovery period casting serious doubt on his Super Cup participation.
Following Sunday's clash with Real Betis, Madrid head to Saudi Arabia for the competition and will meet Atlético Madrid in the semifinals on Jan. 8. Even a possible final match against Barcelona or Athletic Club three days afterward would seem to arrive too early for Mbappé.
Alonso, nevertheless, remains optimistic.
"We'll continue pushing the schedule," Alonso stated. "It depends largely on his condition, and we're going to make every effort to bring him back as quickly as we can. When exactly? That remains the question. I'm uncertain.
"I'll provide a more definitive response at the upcoming prematch press briefing."
Considering Mbappé's recent knee troubles—he missed last month's 2–1 loss to Manchester City—Alonso dismissed claims that the Frenchman's fitness had been mishandled.
"Absolutely not," he responded firmly. "Following every game, we evaluate the player's condition, monitor how he's feeling and then make choices based on the match and team requirements. We'll observe his development now, and we'll do whatever we can to return him as quickly as possible."
Alonso: Club World Cup Demonstrates Real Madrid Can Function Without Mbappé

Alonso starts 2026 in the same manner he began his role as Madrid coach. When he arrived during the summer, he was immediately forced to manage without Mbappé, who was sidelined by illness during the Club World Cup.
The rise of Gonzalo García assisted Madrid in Mbappé's absence and Alonso acknowledged he might draw inspiration from his summer formation once more.
"It was somewhat adaptable; it's not that we altered things dramatically, but with the players we possessed ... Now we have several additional players, others who aren't present, and we must discover the optimal way to arrange the components," Alonso clarified.
"We did play well. Kylian wasn't available, but we'll certainly miss him going forward because his contribution is remarkable. Not only due to his goals, but because of his impact. However, we must deal with injuries; they're never pleasant.
"I have complete confidence in those who will play tomorrow and those who will feature on Thursday against Atlético. This is a squad, and cohesion, mutual confidence, stability and team chemistry are essential."
