Chelsea have recently been connected to a potential transfer for Porto and Portugal shot-stopper Diogo Costa, yet Xabi Alonso has stated he's "very happy" with the goalkeeping options currently available to him.
Acquiring a top-tier goalkeeper has consistently been highlighted as Chelsea's most pressing need across recent transfer windows, though the Blues have repeatedly chosen not to splash the cash on a new number one. This summer appears to be no exception, but Alonso has made clear he's satisfied with what he has.
"I'm very happy with Rob [Sánchez], Mike [Penders] and Teddy [Sharman-Lowe]," Alonso said. "Mike is a young goalkeeper who had a tremendous season at Strasbourg. Rob has spent many years at the club, at Chelsea, as well as in the Premier League — he brings real experience.
"So having that security in goal is important," Alonso concluded, strongly suggesting that Chelsea may once again go through a summer without signing an established, elite goalkeeper.
Chelsea's Not Currently Working on Diogo Costa Move
Recently, reports emerged suggesting the Blues have their eyes on Costa, who has long been regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers operating outside Europe's top-five leagues.
The 26-year-old put in impressive performances for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup and has frequently been touted for a move to one of Europe's elite clubs. Nevertheless, Porto have consistently maintained that they will only consider letting him leave if the $68.7 million (£51 million) release clause in his deal is activated.
However, recent reports suggest Chelsea have not even made an inquiry regarding a potential deal for the Porto stopper and have no current plans to bring the Portugal international to Stamford Bridge. Alonso's remarks appear to reinforce that position.
The Blues did chase Mike Maignan last summer, but a transfer for the AC Milan goalkeeper ultimately fell through, leaving Chelsea to rely on their existing options. This year, the club seem equally content to stick with what they already have between the posts.
Who Will Be Chelsea's Starting Goakleeper?
For the third consecutive season, Sánchez is set to be Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper when the 2026–27 campaign gets underway — though he did lose the starting role to Đorđe Petrović during his debut season at the club in 2023–24. The Spaniard showed improvement throughout 2025–26, yet he remains prone to costly errors at any moment.
That said, his experience is a valuable commodity for Alonso as he embarks on his first season in charge, and everyone at Chelsea will be hoping the Spaniard can continue to build on what was undoubtedly his finest campaign in a Blues shirt.
Providing cover will be Penders, the imposing 21-year-old Belgian international. Brought to Chelsea in 2024, he has spent the last two seasons out on loan — initially at Genk and then at sister club Strasbourg.
There is considerable excitement around Penders, who has long been seen as Chelsea's goalkeeper of the future and a key factor behind the club's reluctance to invest heavily in another. In his first season as part of the first-team setup, pushing Sánchez for the starting berth would come as no surprise.
With Filip Jörgensen heading to Strasbourg on loan, 23-year-old Sharman-Lowe — who has featured in England's lower divisions and Chelsea's U–23 side in recent years — is expected to fill the third-choice goalkeeper role during Alonso's inaugural season.
