Xabi Alonso Reportedly Expresses Concerns Over Rodrygo's Real Madrid Performance

Xabi Alonso remains reportedly "receptive" to the possibility of Rodrygo departing Real Madrid during the summer transfer window as the coach continues evaluating the star forward.
Real Madrid recently resumed training following a short vacation period to gear up for the 2025–26 campaign. Along with new acquisition Álvaro Carreras and unexpected Real Madrid Castilla promotions, Los Blancos' elite players began work at Valdebebas under Alonso's supervision.
Although speculation has surrounded a potential exit from the Spanish capital, Rodrygo participated alongside Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid City. The 24-year-old appears committed to securing his position in his new coach's starting lineup after featuring for just 92 minutes during the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, the Brazilian faces significant challenges in proving his worth following his disappointing 2024–25 season. According to The Athletic, Alonso and his staff remain "not completely satisfied" with Rodrygo's contributions.
The new manager and the organization reportedly stay "receptive" to potentially transferring Rodrygo, though no fresh progress has emerged regarding his situation.

The winger has remained central to transfer rumors this summer, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain among numerous clubs pursuing Rodrygo's services. While the Brazil international netted only one goal across his final 25 matches for Los Blancos, he possesses sufficient ability and quality to feature as a starter for virtually any European club.
Such a transfer would also provide Rodrygo the opportunity to operate in his favored left-wing role after being deployed on the right flank at Real Madrid. Despite playing outside his natural position, the attacker has contributed to Los Blancos capturing 13 honors, including three La Liga championships and two Champions League crowns.
Current reports suggest Rodrygo desires to persevere with Real Madrid, however, despite facing increased competition from new recruit Franco Mastantuono, who impressed on the right wing and as a playmaker for River Plate.
The decision regarding Rodrygo's future role within the squad will rest with Alonso should the winger achieve his goal of staying in the Spanish capital. Even if the 24-year-old manages to win over his new coach, he could still find himself relegated to substitute duties if Alonso opts to utilize just two forwards in his formation.
