Xabi Alonso Reveals How Real Madrid Bounced Back from Crushing Derby Loss

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has maintained that the crushing loss against city rivals Atlético Madrid might ultimately prove beneficial for his squad.

The devastating 5–2 defeat to their cross-town opponents has intensified scrutiny on Alonso's leadership just months after taking charge, with critics questioning his tactical approach and ability to handle pressure in high-stakes situations.

With Alonso's tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu spanning only 14 matches, he encouraged supporters to view the setback as a developmental opportunity for his youthful roster.

"It's not solely about mentality; I believe it involved tempo and strategic elements that we've examined," Alonso explained. "I don't attribute everything to attitude alone; that's overly simplistic.

"We must enhance our performance at the competitive level. We didn't show sufficient fight. This is part of our adjustment period. We've been in position for approximately 58 days. It stung, but now we're focused on Champions League action.

"We continue making progress. Perhaps to advance two steps forward, you must retreat one step backward. We're still establishing our identity, and we will build upon that foundation."

Tuesday's Champions League clash with Kairat Almaty offers Alonso and Madrid an instant chance to boost spirits which, according to The Athletic, have been severely dampened following the loss. The journey to Kazakhstan was likened to a "funeral procession" by some who traveled.

"We must progress forward," Alonso emphasized. "We're focusing on our approach [against Kairat Almaty], regarding the lineup that will feature. We cannot afford to lose points."

He added: "You must be flexible. We've modified our typical strategy somewhat, but in football, the wisest individual is one who adapts most effectively. It's simply another fixture, and that's not a barrier or justification.

"Perform effectively, pressure well, defend solidly, attack efficiently... With our capabilities, regardless of who takes the field, it will be a competitive encounter. Kairat are well-structured and possess strong form. We must approach this seriously from kickoff."
