Xabi Alonso Reveals Three Bold Ambitions As He Takes Charge At Chelsea

Chelsea have confirmed the permanent signing of Xabi Alonso as manager, who laid out three distinct goals upon accepting his first top-flight managerial role in England.

The former Real Madrid manager revealed his priorities would center on "hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies," a trio of ambitions that have proven elusive for those who came before him during BlueCo's controversial stewardship of the club.

The announcement of Alonso's arrival came shortly after Chelsea suffered defeat in Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City under caretaker manager Calum McFarlane. Liam Rosenior had been given just 106 days in the hot seat — enough time to lose the dressing room's confidence but far too little to establish any coherent footballing identity — before being dismissed in April.

Enzo Maresca had come the closest to meeting the demanding standards set by Chelsea's ownership, claiming the Conference League and Club World Cup while also securing Champions League qualification in his debut season in charge of a relatively inexperienced squad. The Blues were tracking toward yet another top-five finish when Maresca unexpectedly departed at the start of the new year following a breakdown in relations with the club's senior leadership.

It seemed deliberate that Alonso emphasized unity in his brief introductory remarks as Chelsea's new head coach. "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition," he told the club's official website. "We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies."

"Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football," Alonso added, "and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club."

Alonso has signed a four-year contract with Chelsea but will not begin his duties until the start of the 2026–27 season, officially taking the reins from July 1, 2026 ahead of preseason preparations.

Chelsea's BlueCo ownership has developed a habit of handing out excessively lengthy contracts to players and managers alike, most of whom have rarely lasted beyond a single campaign. Rosenior, for example, was gone within three months despite signing a six-and-a-half-year agreement. This pattern has proven an enormously expensive display of misplaced optimism, with upwards of $59 million believed to have been paid out in compensation to the previous five permanent managers who departed under the current ownership.

Expectations are considerably higher for Alonso, whose achievement of guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023–24 established him as one of the most compelling managerial talents in the sport. A difficult spell at Real Madrid temporarily tarnished that reputation, but the turmoil that has followed since his dismissal by the club in January has only served to restore his standing in the football world.
