Xabi Alonso Stuns Fans by Likening 'Absolutely Outstanding' Joao Pedro to a Real Madrid Icon

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has declared that striker João Pedro belongs in the same conversation as Manchester City's Erling Haaland, drawing a comparison between the Brazilian and Real Madrid icon Karim Benzema.

Pedro was recently awarded the Premier League Player of the Month for August following his impressive start under Alonso, and he now boasts 25 goals and 11 assists in just 57 appearances for Chelsea.

When asked whether Pedro deserves to be mentioned alongside Haaland as one of the Premier League's top strikers, Alonso firmly stated: "I would say yes.

"If you count how many elite strikers we have in the Premier League, I am sure that João is among them. So I would rate him that way.

"He has been outstanding. Not just football-wise, but personality-wise too. His maturity, his drive. He has a very clear goal this year: to have a brilliant season, to score plenty of goals and to be a contender for not just this month but many more.

"I am not surprised, but truly delighted with the type of player we have here in João."

Why Pedro Reminds Alonso of Benzema

Alonso's admiration for Pedro went even further, as he went so far as to suggest he recognizes traces of his former Madrid teammate Benzema in his new frontman.

During their time together at Madrid between 2009 and 2015, Alonso and Benzema shared the field on 195 occasions. While it wasn't the most prolific chapter of Benzema's career, it has grown in reputation over time, with many now acknowledging the crucial role the Frenchman played in elevating Cristiano Ronaldo alongside him.

"In many ways he reminds me of Benzema," Alonso said of Pedro. "Because he is dangerous inside the box, he is effective outside the box, he is comfortable drifting to the left, and he is strong in the air.

"He is very well-rounded and he is intelligent.

"He is still young. He still has areas to improve. But he possesses so many truly exceptional qualities."

Much like Benzema alongside Ronaldo, Pedro's ability to link up with Cole Palmer and summer arrival Morgan Rogers has drawn widespread admiration for all three, who have emerged as one of Europe's most thrilling attacking units in the opening weeks of the campaign.

The trio have already combined for 15 goal contributions across just five matches, and will be looking to build on that record when they face Hull City on Saturday.
