"It was a decision from myself and from the club," Xabi Alonso told reporters after leaving Enzo Fernández out of Chelsea's squad for the Carabao Cup clash against Luton Town.
On the surface, it seemed like a minor matter. A Premier League side faces lower-league opposition in the early rounds of a domestic cup, and star players are routinely rested. Nothing unusual there. Yet Alonso has maintained that "every cup is important, every game is important"—words that accompanied Chelsea's official team announcement on social media.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers were in the starting lineup, as were new signing Maxence Lacroix, Reece James as captain, Estêvão, and new addition Danny Welbeck. Fernández, however, was nowhere to be found—not even among the substitutes.
"We assess individually and collectively what's best for the team, for tonight, what was better for the other players who were featuring, and we make the call," Alonso explained.
Enzo's response? "He's a good professional," the former Real Madrid boss insisted. "He's training well and I have nothing to say about him. It was simply a decision we had to make with tonight's game in mind, and we'll see how things stand for Sunday."
Does Fernandez Have One Foot Out of the Chelsea Exit Door?
The ongoing will-he-won't-he saga surrounding Fernández has been simmering just as long as the Julián Alvarez situation playing out in Spain. It all began in March, when the Argentine openly entertained the idea of joining Real Madrid—remarks that upset then-manager Liam Rosenior and triggered an internal suspension.
Fernández eventually returned to the pitch (largely out of necessity for Chelsea), but his desire to move on has not faded. Interestingly, it's no longer Real Madrid pursuing him—they distanced themselves with a characteristically Madrid-style statement—but rather Manchester City, now under the guidance of former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea set a firm deadline for City, making clear that a £120 million ($162.1 million at current rates) offer would need to arrive before the Premier League season kicked off last Friday. No bid came through, though that is far from the final chapter of this story.

Alonso also left Fernández out of Chelsea's thrilling 3–2 victory over rivals Fulham on Monday evening—a result that gave the Spaniard the ideal beginning to his Premier League managerial tenure. It's a clear sign that something is amiss with the former World Cup champion, and a transfer to the eight-time Premier League champions now appears to be a matter of when, not if.
City must of course submit a bid to make it happen, and one is widely anticipated amid significant squad reshuffling. Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Tijjani Reijnders, and Nico González have all moved on—generating substantial transfer income—leaving City thin in central midfield. They require a dynamic box-to-box midfielder who brings quality and Premier League experience, and someone already familiar with Maresca's methods.
That player is almost certainly Fernández, who would be viewed as the ideal complement to fellow new arrivals Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi. Alonso appears to have accepted the situation—though he would never publicly admit a willingness to sell—and Chelsea stand to benefit financially as they seek to reclaim their place among the Premier League's elite following a turbulent recent spell.
