Rodri's substitute appearance grabbed most of the attention on Thursday evening, as Barcelona hosted their opening home fixture of the campaign. Yet it was the club's emerging talents who helped establish a new club milestone, with Hansi Flick fielding the youngest starting lineup in Camp Nou's history.
Barça's squad had a distinctly homegrown character for the encounter against Athletic Club, with seven products of the club's celebrated La Masía academy featured in the starting eleven.
Among those seven, Fermín López got his name on the scoresheet, while the other goalscorer in the 2–0 victory, Raphinha, was one of just two overseas players in the side—alongside Anthony Gordon.
Barça's lineup was notably youthful, with four players born in 2007—Lamine Yamal, Marc Bernal, Pau Cubarsí and left back Xavi Espart. Of all the starters, only Raphinha, aged 29, was born in the previous century.

While Barça drawing on their own academy is far from unprecedented, doing so to this degree brings back memories of Pep Guardiola's legendary squad that claimed the Champions League title in 2010–11 with a starting XI that also boasted seven La Masía graduates.
Barça journalist and historian Oriol Jové notes that Thursday's lineup—averaging 23.18 years of age—was the youngest ever assembled by a home coach at Camp Nou, breaking the previous benchmark of 23.26 set during a Champions League fixture against Bate Borisov in 2011. This record, however, excludes a 1984 match against Real Zaragoza when manager Terry Venables was compelled to field an amateur side averaging just over 20 years old amid a players' strike.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona's youth-driven approach means they share the joint-lowest average squad age in La Liga this season (24.2), alongside Levante. La Blaugrana also rank fifth among Europe's top five leagues, with only Auxerre (23.6), Parma (23.4), Toulouse (22.5) and Strasbourg (22) boasting younger rosters.
Inexperience has been no obstacle for Barça in the early stages of the 2026–27 campaign, with Barcelona claiming victories in their opening two matches while scoring seven goals and keeping a clean sheet throughout. Goalkeeper Joan García did not face a single shot on target as Barça cruised past Athletic Club on Thursday night.
Espart Is Barcelona's Latest 'Incredible' Prospect
While the abilities of Lamine and Cubarsí are widely recognised, 19-year-old Espart is a name many supporters are only beginning to discover. The adaptable teenager, who joined the club at under-10 level, made six appearances across all competitions last season and has shone in both of Barcelona's outings this term after being handed the No. 12 shirt.
"He's always focused, and tactically he's very good," Flick said of Espart, who has started the season at left back but is equally capable on the right or in midfield. "He's a truly top player. I'm a little surprised by his composure, by how he plays... He's great. I think it's not easy for a footballer to play in that position, and he's done a great job, with and without the ball."
Meanwhile, post-match, García described his young teammate as "incredible", adding "I already feel a bit like a veteran at 25."
On the team's aspirations for the season, he continued: "I see people very excited. We have a younger group than last year. We have a lot of energy, a real desire to do great things with many of our own players. We have a pretty complete squad and we can manage playing time. If we don't push ourselves, we won't achieve our goals. We're on the right track, but we've only just begun."
