Zidane Breaks Silence and Delivers Bold Verdict on the Cristiano Ronaldo Debate

Zinédine Zidane, who once managed Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, has argued that the world "really should celebrate" the Portuguese star's "great career" instead of focusing on whether it is heading toward an unfortunate end.

The bond between Zidane and Ronaldo was built during their time together at Real Madrid. Having served as the club's advisor, sporting director, and assistant manager, Zidane stepped into the head coaching role in January 2016. Over the following two-and-a-half years, Madrid claimed three Champions League trophies and a La Liga title, while Ronaldo surpassed the 100-goal mark.

With a playing legacy nearly as celebrated as Ronaldo's own, Zidane stands among the rare managers capable of dropping his star player without damaging their relationship. Jorge Jesus attempted to name a 41-year-old Ronaldo as a substitute in back-to-back Portugal matches during the current international break, only to prompt his abrupt departure from the squad.

Ronaldo's behavior has dominated headlines throughout the fall, yet Zidane showed no inclination to speak ill of his former player.

"We really should celebrate his great career," the France manager stated when pressed on the Ronaldo situation. "What he has achieved is truly exceptional. I was fortunate to have him in my squad; he helped me win some incredible things. So hats off to Cristiano. I have enormous respect for all players in general, but even more so for those I've worked closely with—especially Cristiano, who helped us claim so many titles."
