Bayern Munich Aggressively Pursues Star Player Coveted by Arsenal and Chelsea

Bayern Munich are reportedly advancing negotiations to acquire Athletic Club's Nico Williams, who has previously attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

The German champions are looking to strengthen their wing options this summer following their failure to extend Leroy Sané's contract, with the player subsequently agreeing to join Galatasaray on a three-year deal.

Williams has captured attention from numerous elite clubs after his impressive performances for Spain during their victorious Euro 2024 campaign. Barcelona previously showed strong interest but decided against paying his high release clause, while Premier League sides Arsenal and Chelsea have long monitored his situation.

Chelsea appears to have shifted focus toward Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, while Arsenal's current priority lies in strengthening their striker position.

With Barcelona pursuing alternative targets, Bayern could face minimal competition for Williams. According to Sky Sport Germany , the Bundesliga giants have already conducted meetings with the player's representatives, though securing his services will require substantial financial investment.

Williams' contract includes a release clause estimated at approximately €60 million (£51.2 million, $69.5 million), which must be paid in full according to La Liga regulations. Additionally, the Spanish winger is reportedly seeking an annual gross salary of €20 million (£24.8 million, $33.68 million). Such compensation would place Williams alongside Joshua Kimmich as Bayern's joint-third highest-paid player, with only Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer earning more.

Bayern had previously offered Sané between €12–13 million (£10.2–11 million, $13.7–14.9 million) to remain at the club, indicating they would need to significantly increase their wage proposal to meet Williams' demands.

Despite a slow start to the season following Euro 2024, Williams finished the La Liga campaign with 10 goal contributions and added seven more in the Europa League as Athletic Club reached the semi-finals. While his star potential is evident, Bayern must be fully convinced of his value to proceed with such a substantial investment.

The Bavarian club is also considering Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola as an alternative option.
