Liverpool Names Steep Price Tag for Rising Star Quansah as Clubs Circle

Liverpool are expected to set a price tag exceeding £40 million ($54.2 million) for defender Jarell Quansah following interest from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 22-year-old center-back had a remarkable debut season in 2023-24 but saw his performance decline under manager Arne Slot's leadership last season. After being substituted at halftime for Ibrahima Konaté during the season opener against Ipswich Town, Quansah found it difficult to secure regular playing time with the Reds.
Despite his performance dip in the 2024-25 campaign, The Athletic indicates that Leverkusen, now under former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, have targeted Quansah as a potential replacement following Jonathan Tah's transfer to Bayern Munich.
The German club would need to invest over €47.1 million for the Liverpool academy product, with any potential deal being handled "separately" from Florian Wirtz's upcoming transfer to Anfield. Acquiring Quansah would require Leverkusen to pay a club-record transfer fee.

According to the report, Liverpool "haven't been planning to sell this summer," though Leverkusen's interest might "cause them to reconsider their position."
This isn't the first time Quansah has attracted attention from other clubs, as Newcastle United pursued him seriously last summer. At that time, Liverpool promptly rejected Newcastle's approach.
Liverpool and Leverkusen are developing a strong transfer relationship, having already completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from the German side earlier this summer. The clubs have now also reached an agreement for Wirtz, with Liverpool breaking their transfer record to secure the talented attacking midfielder.
Should Quansah leave, Slot would need to find a replacement, as Virgil Van Dijk, Konaté and Joe Gomez would be Liverpool's only remaining senior center-back options.
