Diaz Rejects Massive Contract as Barcelona and Saudi Clubs Circle

Liverpool forward Luis Díaz is reportedly so determined to join Barcelona that he has rejected a "multi-million-dollar" contract extension from his current club to pursue a transfer to the Spanish giants.

The Colombian star has been consistently connected with the Spanish champions in transfer rumors, though he previously dismissed such speculation by expressing his commitment to Liverpool. However, his position changed dramatically in early June when Díaz openly admitted he was engaged in discussions with other clubs.

"With the transfer window opening, we're exploring the best options available," Díaz casually stated. "I'm waiting to see what develops. Whether Liverpool offers a satisfactory extension or I complete my remaining two years, I'll be content."

According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool's initial extension offer failed to meet Díaz's expectations, despite his contract running until 2027. The speedy winger is reportedly "focused exclusively on Barcelona," which led him to promptly decline Liverpool's "multi-million-dollar" proposal.

Díaz apparently "feels underappreciated" at Liverpool—a sentiment potentially influenced by the anticipated arrival of Florian Wirtz and the substantial salary package he's expected to receive. While the incoming German talent is reportedly set to earn up to £245,000 ($330,000) weekly, Díaz is believed to be receiving a comparatively modest £55,000 ($75,000) per week.

The former Porto player could significantly increase his earnings by accepting reported offers from Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr. Cristiano Ronaldo's team is reportedly seeking another attacking player to partner with the veteran superstar, who is expected to remain in Riyadh despite his own contract uncertainties.

Barcelona's challenging financial circumstances mean they cannot compete with the financial packages Liverpool would offer—not to mention the enormous sums promised by Saudi Arabian clubs. Nevertheless, Mundo Deportivo reports that Díaz would be willing to reduce his financial demands for the opportunity to play for Barcelona. How much playing time the Colombian would actually receive remains questionable, considering Hansi Flick already has two Ballon d'Or candidates available for selection on each wing.
