Rashford Eyes Barcelona Move While Flick Pushes for Alternative Target

Marcus Rashford is currently awaiting Barcelona's transfer verdict, as the Spanish champions are reportedly considering various options to strengthen their offensive lineup this summer.

Rashford is anticipated to depart Manchester United following his loan spell at Aston Villa during the latter half of 2024–25. United are ready to sell the English forward for £40 million ($54.3 million) this summer, and Villa reportedly don't have priority rights to acquire the 27-year-old.

During his temporary stint with the Villans, Rashford made 17 appearances and contributed to 10 goals, but his time was cut short by a hamstring injury from which he has now recovered. The forward is presently conditioning himself in Marbella to prepare for preseason and the upcoming 2025–26 campaign, and Rashford has clearly indicated his preferred destination.

Mundo Deportivo states that the England international is waiting for Barcelona's decision from his Marbella training base. The La Liga champions have shown interest in Rashford, viewing him as a more economical alternative to targets like Liverpool's Luis Díaz and Athletic Club's Nico Williams.

The report emphasizes that Rashford's ability to play multiple positions—both as a wide attacker and central forward—along with his relatively reasonable price tag work to his advantage, but unfortunately for the Englishman, coach Hansi Flick has reportedly requested a different player specifically.

Experienced winger Ivan Perišić has become a favorite of the manager following an impressive season with PSV Eindhoven, and the Croatian will become available on a free transfer at the end of June. However, PSV are reportedly attempting to retain him with a new two-year contract offer.

Barcelona's ongoing financial constraints make pursuing primary targets Díaz and Williams challenging. Much depends on whether Liverpool will lower their reported €70 million (£59 million, $80 million) valuation for Díaz, but Barcelona appear willing to be patient. Consequently, Rashford might face a prolonged wait for clarity regarding their transfer strategy.

Flick requires additional attacking reinforcement for 2025–26 to properly support starting wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. The German coach heavily relied on these two preferred options last season due to limited trusted alternatives. Whoever Barcelona ultimately sign will need to provide immediate backup while creating stronger competition for starting positions.
