AC Milan Targets Arsenal Defender in Surprise Transfer Swoop

As Theo Hernández continues to be connected with a potential transfer to Atlético Madrid this summer, reports suggest AC Milan is considering Arsenal's Oleksandr Zinchenko as a possible replacement in their defensive lineup.

According to Sky Italy, Milan is investigating the terms for acquiring the 28-year-old Zinchenko, who has just one year remaining on his Arsenal contract. Salary requirements could present a challenge for the deal, and it's unclear whether this move depends on Hernández's departure. The two defenders offer different playing styles, with Hernández known for his aggressive forward runs and attacking contributions.

Zinchenko, by contrast, functions more as a possession-oriented player with midfield technical abilities. During his Arsenal tenure, he often moved into central positions to strengthen the midfield, helping maintain possession and advance the ball. When representing Ukraine, he primarily operates as a midfielder.

Last season saw Zinchenko's playing time decrease following Riccardo Calafiori's arrival and Myles Lewis-Skelly's development. He appeared in just 12 matches at left-back, with an additional six appearances in midfield. While none of these players excel defensively, Lewis-Skelly's ball protection skills and speed have made him the preferred choice—particularly given Calafiori's injury issues.

Zinchenko joined Arsenal from Manchester City in summer 2022 for £32 million ($43.4 million), transferring alongside Gabriel Jesus. Both players were instrumental in Arsenal's transformation into title contenders, though they've subsequently been viewed more as transitional acquisitions rather than permanent solutions.

Should Arsenal sell Zinchenko, Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori would likely share most of the left-back responsibilities next season, especially after Kieran Tierney's free transfer back to Celtic. A move to Milan could provide Zinchenko with increased playing time, and Serie A's more measured pace might complement his defensive capabilities. He could also serve as a backup midfield option following Tijjani Reinders' transfer to Zinchenko's former club.

Arsenal probably needs to generate revenue through player sales this summer if they intend to make the significant investments required to compete for the Premier League title again. The club is currently seeking a striker and winger to enhance their attacking options. Reports indicate they've already secured agreements to strengthen their midfield and goalkeeper positions.
