Chelsea Battles Liverpool and Man Utd for Rising Ligue 1 Star

Chelsea have become the newest club to make inquiries about Lyon's winger Malick Fofana, according to several sources.
Fofana joined Lyon in January 2024 to replace Bradley Barcola who departed for Champions League victors Paris Saint-Germain. The 20-year-old had an impressive debut season in France's top flight, netting 11 goals and providing six assists across all competitions.
It's well-known that Chelsea are searching for a new attacking player. Their attempt to secure Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens before the Club World Cup was unsuccessful, and manager Enzo Maresca has recently confirmed that strengthening their wide attacking options remains a key focus.
Initially reported by French publication L'Équipe, Chelsea have submitted an inquiry, joining numerous Premier League clubs interested in Fofana. This information was subsequently confirmed by The Athletic.

Reports suggest Chelsea are the first team to directly contact Lyon, although Liverpool have been communicating with Fofana's agents for some time and are considered serious contenders to acquire the Belgian international this summer. Manchester United are also mentioned among the clubs showing interest.
Lyon are currently facing financial difficulties, having been temporarily relegated due to their severe economic problems. However, the transfers of Rayan Cherki to Manchester City and Saïd Benrahma to Saudi Arabian club Neom have helped alleviate some financial pressure.
Consequently, Lyon are expected to ask for approximately €50 million (£42.6 million, $57.8 million) for Fofana, who remains under contract until 2028.
Chelsea's initial approach has not yet developed into concrete negotiations. While Gittens continues to be a primary target, Dortmund's firm stance in negotiations appears to have prompted Maresca's team to explore alternative options.
