Vinicius Jr. Sways Real Madrid's Pursuit of Star Winger Nico Williams

Real Madrid has reportedly withdrawn from pursuing Nico Williams this summer, primarily due to ongoing contract discussions with Vinícius Júnior.
Williams, currently under contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2027, has become a focal point of transfer speculation across Spain. Barcelona's interest in bringing the winger to their squad next season is well-documented, and Real Madrid had also shown interest in adding the Spanish talent to their impressive attacking lineup under Xabi Alonso.
However, Los Blancos' interest in Williams has encountered a significant barrier, potentially clearing the path for Barcelona to secure the player. According to SPORT, Real Madrid has abandoned their pursuit of Williams amid escalating contract demands from Vinícius Júnior.
The Brazilian star is currently negotiating a new agreement with Real Madrid that would exceed the club's preferred compensation package. Reports indicate Vinícius Júnior aims to become the highest-compensated player in Alonso's team, a challenging proposition considering Kylian Mbappé currently earns approximately €30 million ($34.8 million).
Despite receiving attractive financial offers from Saudi Arabian clubs attempting to lure him away from the Spanish powerhouse, Vinícius Júnior has expressed his exclusive desire to play for Real Madrid. Although contract negotiations haven't shown substantial progress yet, both sides remain committed to reaching an agreement.
The star player's financial expectations, however, have made Real Madrid reluctant to trigger Williams's €62 million ($71.6 million) release clause, particularly after the club has already acquired Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Franco Mastantuono during this summer transfer window.
Additionally, Williams would struggle to find his place in Real Madrid's current attacking formation. Vinícius Júnior is firmly established as Los Blancos' starting left winger; even Mbappé's arrival didn't displace the Brazilian from the starting lineup. The Athletic Bilbao forward recorded 18 goal contributions last season, significantly fewer than Vinícius Júnior's 36, despite what many considered an underwhelming season for the Brazilian.
Barcelona, conversely, is specifically seeking a winger and would offer Williams a permanent position on their left flank if they can secure the financial resources to sign the Spanish international.
