Breaking: Liverpool Schedule Wirtz's Medical as Record Transfer Deal Nears Completion

Liverpool are advancing with the acquisition of Bayer Leverkusen talent Florian Wirtz and have reportedly scheduled a medical examination for the German international.

Following several unsuccessful offers, the Reds have reached a substantial agreement with Leverkusen valued at approximately €136.3 million (£116.1 million, $157.8 million)—setting a Premier League transfer record, surpassing Chelsea's £115 million ($156.4 million) acquisition of Moisés Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023. Liverpool are anticipated to pay €117.5 million (£100.1 million, $136.1 million) initially with an additional €18.8 million (£16 million, $21.8 million) in achievement-based bonuses.

The 22-year-old attracted attention from Manchester City and Bayern Munich early in the transfer window but ultimately chose Anfield as his future home.

The Premier League champions have experienced a hectic beginning to the summer, with defensive reinforcements expected to accompany Wirtz's record-setting arrival. Liverpool acted swiftly to substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold with Wirtz's Leverkusen colleague, Jeremie Frimpong, and appear poised to acquire Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

A significant portion of their summer budget will be allocated to the Wirtz transaction, however, and Liverpool aim to finalize the transfer promptly. According to The Athletic, Wirtz's medical examination in Merseyside is planned for Friday and the Reds are expected to formally announce the 22-year-old's signing on a five-year contract shortly thereafter.

Wirtz has developed into a Bundesliga superstar following his recovery from an ACL tear in March 2022 which sidelined him for nine months. He led Leverkusen to an undefeated domestic season under Xabi Alonso in 2023–24 and accumulated 31 goal contributions across 45 appearances last season. Throughout this period, the German international has largely avoided additional injury complications.

While Dominik Szoboszlai performed admirably in an advanced midfield role last season, Liverpool's substantial investment in Wirtz means the 22-year-old will be expected to make an immediate impact at the commencement of Liverpool's title defense.
