2026 MLS Playoffs: Everything Hanging in the Balance as Decision Day Looms!

2026 MLS Playoffs: Everything Hanging in the Balance as Decision Day Looms!

The wait is over. This Saturday, all 30 Major League Soccer clubs will bring their regular seasons to a close, playing out the 34th and final round of fixtures.

With numerous teams still fighting to determine their postseason destinies, this shapes up to be one of the most dramatic Decision Days in recent history.

Here is every Saturday match that still has something meaningful on the line.

Orlando City vs. New England Revolution

Antoine Griezmann

New England Revolution looked set for a fifth consecutive victory, only for Inter Miami to net two late goals and seal a 2–1 win on Sunday. The Revs cannot finish lower than third in the Eastern Conference; however, they must defeat Orlando — and hope Charlotte beats Miami — to claim second place in the East.

As for Orlando City, they are guaranteed at least a wild card berth, currently sitting ninth in the standings. They are still haunted by last year's wild card exit in Chicago. To avoid a repeat and secure at least two playoff matches, the Lions must take all three points against New England. They will also need Cincinnati to drop points and Chicago to defeat Columbus to break into the top seven.

Philadelphia Union vs. Toronto FC

Cavan Sullivan

Philadelphia Union will be eager to end their four-game winless streak when they welcome Toronto FC, who officially ended their playoff hopes last week. Philadelphia currently occupy sixth place, one point ahead of FC Cincinnati and three clear of Columbus Crew, and they must avoid a loss to stay out of eighth.

Given the circumstances, Philadelphia may well settle for a draw, locking in a first-round playoff series against either Miami or New England rather than risking a defeat that could drop them to the wild card match.

Inter Miami vs. Charlotte FC

Rodrigo de Paul

Inter Miami must defeat Charlotte to lock up second place in the Eastern Conference. A draw will not suffice if New England win in Florida. Meanwhile, Charlotte — who cannot finish lower than fifth — will be pushing to climb to fourth.

The Crown will almost certainly face Chicago Fire in the playoffs, and if they can topple Miami — combined with Chicago failing to beat Columbus — they will host the first and potential third match of the opening round.

FC Cincinnati vs. Nashville SC

Nashville SC

FC Cincinnati are battling for an automatic playoff spot, aware that a draw could push them down to the wild card position. They sit one point behind Philadelphia, two ahead of Columbus and three clear of Orlando, and a win is essential to guarantee at least two postseason appearances.

As for Nashville SC, they are chasing history. If the reigning Supporters' Shield champions avoid defeat in Ohio, they will surpass Inter Miami's 2024 side for the highest points total in a single MLS regular season (74).

Chicago Fire vs. Columbus Crew

Robert Lewandowski

Chicago Fire need a victory to guarantee a fourth-place finish and home-field advantage for the opening match and potential decider against Charlotte. Meanwhile, Columbus Crew are hoping to leap out of the wild card positions and into the automatic spots on the final day.

Currently eighth in the standings, Columbus will need some fortune to secure a first-round berth. They require one of two scenarios to break into the top seven: a win at Chicago paired with Toronto FC beating Philadelphia, or a win at Chicago paired with Nashville drawing or beating Cincinnati.

Houston Dynamo vs. St. Louis CITY

Lawrence Ennali

Houston Dynamo currently sit fifth in the Western Conference, level on points with St. Louis CITY and one behind San Jose Earthquakes. A home win over St. Louis would move them into fourth. If they win and Minnesota beat San Jose, they would climb to third.

The bottom line: Houston hold their own destiny as they chase a top-four finish and home playoff privileges. Can they record their first home win since September 9 and knock off the U.S. Open Cup champions?

Seattle Sounders vs. LAFC

Son Heung-Min

While LAFC have virtually confirmed their sixth-place finish, Seattle Sounders face a steep climb to sneak into the postseason. Brian Schmetzer's side sits 10th in the Western Conference, level on points with Portland Timbers and Colorado Rapids and one behind LA Galaxy.

Having collected just two points from their last five outings, the Sounders' campaign is unraveling. They must return to winning form on Saturday and will also need at least one favorable result elsewhere to extend their season.

Minnesota United vs. San Jose Earthquakes

San Jose Earthquakes

Minnesota United are hanging by a thread. They sit 12th in the West, one point behind Real Salt Lake and two adrift of Seattle, Colorado and Portland. Remarkably, the Loons could finish anywhere between 7th and 13th, and they need a string of results to fall their way to punch their playoff ticket.

As for San Jose Earthquakes, they cannot drop below fourth and are guaranteed to host their playoff opener. A win at Minnesota, combined with Dallas losing to Colorado, would see them finish second in the West.

Real Salt Lake vs. LA Galaxy

Hirving Lozano

This is the textbook definition of "win or go home." The Galaxy sit seventh in the West, and failure to beat Real Salt Lake puts their playoff qualification in serious jeopardy. A draw or loss could still be enough to advance, but it is far from certain.

On the flip side, Real Salt Lake need to defeat the Galaxy while also requiring at least two of Colorado, Portland, and Seattle to drop points. RSL could also sneak into the wild card spots with a draw, but they would additionally need Colorado, Portland, and Seattle to lose, along with Minnesota drawing or losing to San Jose.

FC Dallas vs. Colorado Rapids

Samuel Sarver

After being held to a draw by bottom-of-the-table Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas will be looking to bounce back against Colorado Rapids. Currently occupying the final playoff spot, Colorado must win to guarantee their postseason place, with Seattle, Real Salt Lake and Minnesota all breathing down their necks.

However, while a draw may not be enough for Colorado to secure their playoff berth, it would be sufficient for Dallas to leapfrog San Jose and wrap up second place in the West.

Austin FC vs. Portland Timbers

David Da Costa

Portland Timbers have featured in the last two Western Conference wild card matches, falling in 2024 and triumphing in 2025. They can avoid a third consecutive appearance by overcoming Austin, provided the Galaxy also drop points.

However, a draw in Austin leaves them vulnerable to being overtaken by Colorado, Seattle, and Real Salt Lake. Minnesota could also leapfrog them with a win if Portland lose. With Austin already out of contention after losing five of their last six, the Timbers have no excuse not to collect all three points in Texas.
