Arsenal Plunged Into Selection Chaos As Bukayo Saka's Injury Rocks The Squad

Arsenal are emerging from a defensive injury crisis that threatened to derail the early part of their season, but Mikel Arteta now faces a fresh headache further up the field.

William Saliba and Piero Hincapié remain the only defenders currently sidelined, with the latter expected to potentially return by the weekend. Saliba has been a long-term absentee since the summer after aggravating a back issue during the 2026 World Cup, though he too appears to be progressing ahead of schedule and could be fully fit sometime next month.

It is in the attacking areas, now that Bukayo Saka has been ruled out, where the real concern lies.

Saka, who had enjoyed a healthy start to 2026–27 following injury-plagued spells in each of the previous two campaigns, was forced off just 10 minutes into Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

"It doesn't look good at all, but we have to wait and see," Arteta told reporters after the match. "It's his quad. It happened early in the game, and the level of intensity his game demands is extraordinary. The quality, strength and focus required has to be at its peak, and unfortunately these things happen." In an earlier comment to TNT Sports, the Arsenal boss said it is "never a good sign" when a player has to come off due to "a really sharp pain."

Saka has frequently dealt with thigh and hamstring problems throughout his Arsenal career, ranging from minor niggles to more significant absences—at one stage during 2024–25 he was sidelined for 99 consecutive days, a period in which he had been on track to break the Premier League's single-season assist record.

Arsenal require further assessment before placing a timeline on Saka's return, but Arteta's early remarks suggest this won't be a swift recovery and the winger could be absent for some time.

Arsenal's Summer Transfer Window Didn't Deliver

Vinicius Junior

The decision not to sign another wide forward during the summer, and then actively moving Gabriel Martinelli on, could come back to haunt the club.

It was evident that, having claimed the Premier League title but falling short in the Champions League final, Arsenal were determined to strengthen. The dependable but limited Leandro Trossard was sold and promptly replaced with a younger option in Christos Tzolis. However, that wasn't the complete picture, as the club had also shown interest in Morgan Rogers, who chose Chelsea, Bradley Barcola, who opted for Liverpool, and Vinícius Júnior, who ultimately signed a lucrative contract extension with Real Madrid.

It was clear Arteta had grown frustrated with Martinelli, who initially pushed back against leaving, but the Brazilian soon encountered the ruthlessness of a manager who had just ended a 22-year wait for a league title. There appears to have been an effort from the player's side to reshape the narrative, but Arsenal were intent on cashing in. Without a genuine upgrade secured, that decision may prove to be an error, as quality wide players are increasingly hard to come by.

Arteta Dealing With Limited Saka Replacements

Eberechi Eze vs. Bayern Munich

Saka was replaced in Munich by Eberechi Eze. The 28-year-old, who arrived for a significant fee ahead of last season, is not a natural winger, preferring a No. 10 role, but has been deployed on the left following Martinelli's departure without a direct replacement. Eze did find the net against Bayern, making it back-to-back Champions League goals, though his overall numbers remain underwhelming — a pattern that largely held true last season outside of north London derby fixtures.

Noni Madueke had started against Bayern as Tzolis, loosely pencilled in for a November return, continues to be unavailable. The England international has struggled to make an impact since coming into the side after the international break due to a shortage of alternatives, and has done little to inspire confidence.

Arsenal's only other winger option is Max Dowman, and it comes as no surprise that Arteta is reluctant to place too heavy a burden on a player who is still just 16 years old.

Much is made of Arsenal's squad depth. But for however long Saka remains on the sidelines — be it days, weeks or months — the Gunners will need considerably more from the options available to them.
