Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona Hangs in the Balance: What Could Force a Suspension

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona Hangs in the Balance: What Could Force a Suspension

All fixtures across Spain's top two football divisions this weekend—including the high-profile summit clash between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona—may be called off as a tribute to Jesús de Miguel.

De Miguel passed away tragically on Tuesday, one day after sustaining an injury during a La Liga 2 fixture between his Tenerife side and FC Andorra. De Miguel, a forward who played a key role in Tenerife's promotion from Spain's third division last season, suffered a chest injury that triggered cardiac arrest. The 30-year-old was revived and his condition stabilized, but his health took a turn for the worse and he passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Opposing goalkeeper Jesús Owono received a red card following the incident. He has since deleted his Instagram account after facing a wave of online abuse in the wake of De Miguel's death.

Barcelona had already been in action against Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, but winger Raphinha revealed in a post-match interview that "it was quite difficult [to play]" upon hearing the devastating news. "He's a fellow professional and it could have happened to anyone. It could have happened to me. He was the same age as me."

In Spain, El Larguero on Cadena SER radio has reported that officials are weighing the postponement of all 20 matches across La Liga and La Liga 2 scheduled from Friday, Nov. 6 through Monday, Nov. 9. The Athletic also reports that the Spanish footballers' union (AFE) has formally requested the suspension of all matches across the top two divisions.

Tenerife's upcoming fixture against Granada has already been called off.

It is not a simple matter of canceling all football this weekend, as "contractual obligations" with broadcasters and sponsors would need to be addressed, along with the logistical challenge of rescheduling an entire round of matches. However, senior figures are at least "examining it" as a viable option.

Jesus Owono 'Suffering' Over Role in Tragedy

Jesus de Miguel tributes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

A standard investigation into De Miguel's death has been launched, though Owono is "very unlikely" to face any criminal charges, according to Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sénchez-Jáuregui, as quoted by Spanish news agency EFE.

Owono has yet to make any public statement but has received support from teammate Lautaro Spatz.

"There are moments when football loses all meaning. Moments that stay with you forever and remind you just how fragile life truly is," Spatz wrote on Instagram. "What we went through is something none of us will ever be able to forget. A tragedy that has left us utterly devastated, lost for words, and consumed by a grief that is hard to put into words.

"Those of us who know [Owono] know the kind of person he is, how deeply he is hurting right now, and that he would never deliberately harm anyone. In football, accidents happen, but no one can ever imagine that one of them could lead to such heartbreaking consequences."
