Three Bold Moves Man Utd Must Make to Fuel Their Stunning Champions League Revival

Obituaries for Michael Carrick's Manchester United reign were practically being drafted at halftime of Tuesday night's Champions League encounter with Roma.

The Red Devils, dismal once again, were staring into the abyss of a heavy defeat that would extend their winless streak to 10 games across all competitions. They've been historically dreadful to open the 2026–27 campaign, and their first-half showing on Tuesday ranked among their most wretched performances yet.

A free-flowing Roma side only needed to be functional to surge into a 2–0 advantage, and could easily have been three or four goals ahead by the time Carrick's players were met with a chorus of boos at the halftime whistle. There was absolutely no indication that the Red Devils had a comeback in them.

Yet from somewhere deep within, United summoned a response. A potentially career-saving turnaround has reignited the Theatre of Dreams, with Matheus Cunha's two late goals transforming a grim deficit into an ecstatic victory.

Whether Tuesday's drama marks a genuine turning point or just a fleeting spark remains to be seen, with Aston Villa heading to a reinvigorated Old Trafford before the international break.

Here's how Carrick's Man Utd can capitalize on their 3–2 win over Roma.

Ride the Sudden Wave of Momentum

It was a textbook tale of two halves at Old Trafford, and there was no elaborate tactical overhaul from Carrick at the break.

Man Utd initially looked ill-suited to handle the peculiar demands of Gian Piero Gasperini's system, which employs aggressive man-marking across the pitch. The Red Devils were repeatedly caught out, with a string of technical blunders undermining their shambolic first-half display.

They appeared to have no solutions, which made their comeback all the more remarkable. In reality, it was an embrace of the intangibles that drove Man Utd's improvement. The early goal helped, with Old Trafford galvanized by Bruno Fernandes converting from the penalty spot after his initial effort was saved, only for Bryan Cristante to be penalized for encroachment.

A drifting, listless performance then transformed into one of conviction. The hosts threw themselves into challenges and played with renewed energy both on and off the ball. Roma were caught off guard — life had been so comfortable for them in the first half that they had no blueprint for dealing with a surge in United's intensity.

"This place [Old Trafford] does magical things," Carrick said after the final whistle, and Roma did indeed appear to wilt under the energy generated from the stands. Sometimes there's no neat or tactical explanation for a dramatic shift — United simply harnessed the most powerful force available: momentum.

Sustain it, and Aston Villa could be in for a difficult afternoon this weekend.

Hand Shea Lacey the Keys

Michael Carrick, Shea Lacey

Man Utd fans have grown increasingly frustrated amid the chaos over the limited chances given to promising youngster Shea Lacey.

The academy product netted his first senior goal during United's Carabao Cup loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in September, and didn't appear for Carrick's squad until their visit to Como on Oct. 21. United were already 4–0 down when Lacey came on in the closing stages, and he later featured as a substitute in the 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Supporters sat through 75 minutes of Amad Diallo, potentially not fully fit, struggling in a one-on-one battle against Brazilian international Wesley. The Ivorian found no joy in that duel, completing just two dribbles and failing to register an accurate cross or create a single opportunity. Carrick then turned to Lacey for the final stretch, and the 19-year-old delivered a cameo full of promise — even before United had completed their stunning comeback.

Boldly direct, Lacey completed more dribbles (three) in 15 minutes than Amad managed in 75. Wesley was left scrambling against the teenager's youthful energy, with Lacey's clever movement and sharpness causing the Brazilian real problems. It was a brilliant pass from the youngster that set up Cunha's winner, and United's hero described his impact off the bench as "unbelievable."

Many will now be calling for Lacey to earn his first Premier League start this weekend, particularly given what Carrick has extracted from Amad so far this season — just one goal contribution in 448 minutes.

The kid looks ready — so why not?

Matheus Cunha's Got the Hot Hand

Matheus Cunha

Carrick has been without Benjamin Šeško for much of the early-season chaos, and United learned last month that the Slovenian striker won't return until January due to a persistent shin problem.

The Red Devils have Joshua Zirkzee as backup, but Carrick has largely preferred other options to cover Šeško's absence. Bryan Mbeumo has been the primary choice given his impressive numbers as a center forward last season, but it may be time for Cunha to reclaim the spotlight following his midweek brace.

Mbeumo simply isn't finding his scoring touch at the moment, highlighted by his double-post misfortune at 2–1 against Roma, following Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders' extraordinary save from his powerful volley on Saturday. Cunha, meanwhile, is developing a knack for being in the right place at the right time, doubling his seasonal tally on Tuesday.

It was a massive night for the Brazilian, though his rollercoaster showing was capped by a needless second yellow card after his heroics. He'll be suspended for the trip to Sporting CP later this month, but will be available for Carrick this weekend.

After struggling to make an impact drifting in from the left, both of Cunha's late goals came from him occupying a more central or even right-sided position inside the box. His first was opportunistic, pouncing on a Leo Balerdi mistake, while his second was spectacular — a thunderous finish at the near post.

In red-hot form, Man Utd need Cunha as close to goal as possible.
