Barcelona Inch Closer to Shattering Real Madrid's 40-Year La Liga Record in Historic Pursuit

Barcelona are just two victories away from becoming the first club in La Liga since 1985–86 to complete an entire season unbeaten at home.

Hansi Flick's squad could become the first team since La Liga's expansion to 20 clubs to go undefeated across all 19 home fixtures in a single campaign — an extraordinary achievement for a Barcelona side that is enjoying one of the most statistically dominant seasons in Spanish top-flight history.

Real Madrid's legendary 'La Quinta del Buitre' side posted a flawless home record during the 1985–86 season, the last occasion such a feat was accomplished. That Real Madrid side played 17 home matches, meaning Barcelona have already equalled that mark and could set a new benchmark by winning their two remaining home fixtures.

* Season ongoing

This would mark only the second time in the club's history that Barça finish a league season with an unblemished home record, having previously achieved it back in 1959–60.

The 3–2 loss to Villarreal in their final home match of 2024–25 remains the last time Barcelona surrendered points at home in the league — a game that took place just three days after Flick's side were crowned champions of Spain.

Since then, it has been an unbroken run of home wins, even as Barcelona navigated disruption and uncertainty surrounding their stadium situation.

Three Different Home Stadiums, No Problem for Barcelona

Barcelona

Construction setbacks prevented Barcelona from returning to their renovated home at Camp Nou at the beginning of 2025–26 as originally scheduled.

With the Estadi Olímpic Lluis Companys — Barcelona's base for the previous two seasons — occupied by other events, the Blaugrana were required to host their opening two home matches of the campaign at the 6,000-seat Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Barcelona subsequently moved back to Montjuïc for three further La Liga home fixtures at the Lluis Companys, before eventually completing their much-anticipated return to Camp Nou in late November, where they have since reeled off 11 consecutive league wins.

Flick's team have operated like a finely tuned machine regardless of which ground they've called home this season. It speaks volumes about Barcelona's quality and consistency that they are now on the verge of such a historic record.

Barcelona's Perfect Record On The Line in El Clásico

Barcelona, Real Madrid.

If Barcelona are to make history and wrap up La Liga with an unblemished home record, they must first overcome fierce rivals Real Madrid in the season's final El Clásico — the first to be staged at Camp Nou in more than three years.

A victory in El Clásico would also hand Barcelona the La Liga title, making them the first side since the competition began in 1929 to clinch the championship in the season's showpiece fixture. Should they beat their arch-rivals on May 10, Flick's men would then need only to see off Real Betis a week later to seal a perfect home La Liga campaign.

Los Blancos will be desperate to derail Barcelona's record-chasing ambitions, but the hosts will head into the match brimming with confidence having won five of the six Clásicos since Flick took charge.

An unblemished home record is not the only milestone Barcelona are targeting as the season draws to a close. Flick's side could also become just the third team in La Liga history to accumulate 100 points, a landmark not reached since Tito Vilanova's Barça side in 2012–13.

It has all the makings of a storybook finale for the Blaugrana, as Hansi Flick's 2025–26 side have the opportunity to cement their place among the greatest teams La Liga has ever seen.
