Bayern Munich Boss Sounds Alarm Over Vincent Kompany's Uncertain Return After Shocking Training Ground Collapse

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has admitted he anticipates being without head coach Vincent Kompany for "weeks" as the manager continues to undergo medical evaluations following his collapse during a training session on Friday.

Reports indicate Kompany had been dealing with illness over the past several weeks, though the exact cause of his collapse has yet to be confirmed. A medical helicopter attended to the manager at the training facility before he was transported to hospital via ambulance.

Fortunately, Eberl confirmed that Kompany is stable and able to communicate, though the sporting director anticipates a prolonged recovery period that could keep the manager sidelined for the foreseeable future.

"The good news: He's stable," Eberl said. "We've spoken. It wasn't a pleasant moment for any of us.

"He's in the hospital and will remain there for a few days while everything is thoroughly checked. This serves as a reminder that health is the most important thing in life—not football. We at Bayern Munich stand united. The priority is identifying the cause. He shouldn't return until he's fully fit. We must protect him.

"The doctors are solely focused on determining what this is. Further tests are required to establish the right course of treatment. He is in excellent hands. We can support him with energy and love.

"Vinnie will be given all the time he needs; we're not placing any deadlines on this. We need to understand what it is. Then we can carefully consider what the recovery timeline looks like.

"We're not talking about days, but weeks. Everyone should be aware of that. The coaching staff has no intention of changing anything. They all carry Vinnie's spirit with them. That's how we'll handle the coming weeks."

Which Games Will Kompany Miss for Bayern?

Aaron Danks

During Kompany's absence, managerial responsibilities will fall to his assistant, Aaron Danks. The two first collaborated at Anderlecht before joining forces again at Bayern in the summer of 2024.

Danks has previously stepped in for Kompany on a temporary basis but now looks set to take charge for an extended stretch, starting with Sunday's away fixture at Freiburg.

October also features a DFB Pokal clash against second-division side Magdeburg, followed by a high-profile home encounter with Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the month.

Bayern then face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Nov. 3, before returning to Bundesliga action four days later against Mainz ahead of the November international break. Whether Kompany will be fit to return after that point will depend on the outcomes of the forthcoming medical assessments.
