Bosnia and Herzegovina Ride Stunning Playoff Upset Into 2026 World Cup With Sky-High Confidence

Bosnia and Herzegovina Ride Stunning Playoff Upset Into 2026 World Cup With Sky-High Confidence

Bosnia and Herzegovina returns to the world stage for the first time since 2014, when they were knocked out in the group stage following losses to Argentina and Nigeria.

Captain and talisman Edin Džeko continues to perform at the highest level at age 40, while U.S.-born midfielder Esmir Bajraktarević, who earned a single USMNT cap in 2024, is another player drawing attention.

Kicking off against co-host Canada in Toronto on June 12, Bosnia and Herzegovina will be optimistic about making history and advancing to the knockout rounds. However, subsequent fixtures against Switzerland and Qatar in Los Angeles and Seattle, respectively, means the squad will cover over 3,000 miles during the group stage alone.

The Road to the World Cup

Bosnia and Herzegovina nearly sidestepped the European playoff drama entirely, only to concede a 77th-minute equalizer to Austria on the final matchday.

That result pushed Sergej Barbarez's side into the playoffs, where they needed late equalizers against Wales in the semifinal and Italy in the final, sending both ties to extra time and penalties. Winning both shootouts could prove to be a positive omen heading into the World Cup.

Manager: Sergej Barbarez

Sergej Barbarez

In the years between earning his coaching license in 2011 and taking the national team reins in 2024, Barbarez spent a decade as a professional poker player. Though known for a combative personality—he accused Brøndby's Welsh boss Steve Cooper of undermining one of his players ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina's clash with Wales—the 54-year-old possesses a remarkable composure, sharpened through years at the poker table.

A vital trait that should ensure his side keeps its nerve even in the most challenging situations.

How Bosnia and Herzegovina Plays

Even at this stage of his career, Džeko remains central to the team's attacking play, with plenty of success coming from delivering crosses to him and his strike partner. It's why right back Amar Dedić and winger Amar Memić are heavily involved and will continue to be key creative outlets. While previous Bosnian generations produced gifted central playmakers, this squad is more pragmatic and results-driven.

Ones to Watch

Edin Dzeko and Esmir Bajraktarević.

X-Factor: With over 1,000 career appearances and more than 450 goals to his name, this World Cup represents the ultimate farewell for Bosnian legend Džeko. But don't write him off as a mere passenger on a sentimental final journey—he netted six times during qualifying.

Breakout Star: It's rare to see a young player look so at ease at the senior international level, but playmaker Bajraktarević exudes genuine confidence. Hard to dispossess, always hunting for the decisive pass, and capable of striking accurately from distance. A name to keep an eye on.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's Predicted Starting XI

Bosnia and Herzegovina's predicted XI for the 2026 World Cup.

Beyond Džeko, the squad lacks significant international experience. Most of Barbarez's regular selections have fewer than 30 senior caps to their name. There is also no clear alternative goalscoring threat to Džeko, who has 73 international goals for Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the rest of the March squad combined have roughly 20.

It will be fascinating to see how the manager utilizes teenage center back Nidal Čelik, who remains uncapped despite being a consistent presence in national team squads. He has been in excellent form for RC Lens in Ligue 1 after cementing his place in their starting lineup as recently as February.

Defender Dennis Hadžikadunić was forced to miss the March squad through injury but is expected to reclaim his starting berth from veteran replacement Sead Kolašinac, formerly of Arsenal.

Current Form

Since both European playoff ties were settled via penalty shootouts, Bosnia and Herzegovina has yet to claim a victory within 90 minutes in 2026. Not that it matters much. The late equalizers against both Wales and Italy in those playoff encounters speak to an admirable resilience and an unwillingness to accept defeat.

What We Can Expect From Bosnia and Herzegovina Fans

Bosnia & Herzegovina fans during playoff vs. Italy

On the night Bosnia and Herzegovina sealed their World Cup spot with a dramatic victory over Italy, footage of supporters pouring into the streets in wild celebration spread rapidly across social media.

The support is intensely passionate: BHFanaticos is a national supporters' group spanning multiple sports, renowned for thunderous rhythmic chanting, drums, and flares—though smuggling those items past stadium security will be a challenge in itself. The group's motto even hints at this: "The sky is going to burn above us."

This passion is rooted in national pride and identity, with Bosnia and Herzegovina a country scarred by war as recently as the early 1990s. Support may not be confined to fans traveling from Europe either, given that nearly 400,000 Americans and Canadians claim Bosnian heritage.

National Expectations

Haris Tabakovic

Bosnia and Herzegovina may still be relative newcomers to the World Cup—the national team has only held FIFA membership for 30 years—but this tournament represents a genuine opportunity.

Reaching the knockout stage is both the expectation and a realistic target, with the playoff win over Italy giving this generation a major confidence boost. In the expanded 48-team format, perhaps just one victory could be enough. If Bosnia and Herzegovina can find their rhythm, progressing to at least the round of 16 seems achievable—and fans back home would be absolutely thrilled with such a result.
