Bruno Fernandes' Captaincy Hangs In The Balance At Struggling Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes' Captaincy Hangs In The Balance At Struggling Man Utd

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick declined to rule out stripping Bruno Fernandes of the captaincy after his public outburst—and maintained that the club's dressing room remains united.

An agitated Fernandes directed criticism at Carrick's tactical approach following the embarrassing 4–1 loss to Como in the Champions League, just days after centre back Lisandro Martínez went further by accusing technical director Jason Wilcox and his recruitment staff of failing the club.

Martínez is believed to have received a fine for his remarks, but Sky Sports News reports that no similar punishment was heading Fernandes's way. That was, however, prior to Carrick's ambiguous comments at Friday's press conference.

When asked whether Fernandes would be dropped or relieved of the captaincy over his remarks, Carrick emphasized: "The most important thing for me is the team and the dynamics in the squad. It is about the football club.

"Whatever the situation is I will always do what is best for the football club."

All attention will be on Carrick's lineup for Sunday's clash with Bournemouth, as the Red Devils look to snap a seven-game winless streak.

Who Could Replace Fernandes As Captain?

Harry Maguire

Supporters have long harbored doubts about the leadership figures in the United dressing room, leaving the club with few clear candidates to take on the armband.

If Fernandes were to be stripped of the role, it would most likely be returned to Harry Maguire. The centre back was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær in 2020 before being relieved of the role by Erik ten Hag three years later, when Fernandes was elevated in his place.

Beyond Maguire, Carrick may find himself short of alternatives. Left back Luke Shaw could be a contender when fit, while Lisandro Martínez might have been in the running had he not been the first to publicly criticize the club.

Summer arrival Youri Tielemans has worn the armband before during his spell at Aston Villa. Right backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, along with backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton, were part of a leadership group under Ruben Amorim and would be considered long-shot options.

Carrick: Man Utd Dressing Room Still Together

The fact that Fernandes was not the first United player to speak out publicly raised alarm bells for club legend Wayne Rooney, whose scathing assessment of both players included accusations of selfishness and doubts over their commitment to the club.

Rooney suggested Fernandes, as captain, would "rip the dressing room apart" by airing his grievances publicly, but Carrick firmly rejected the notion that the squad is fractured.

"It's not divided," he insisted. "We just need to get back to doing what we do best. And we will."
