Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has revealed that a candid conversation with his wife helped him realize he had no desire to depart the club last summer.
Fernandes has spoken candidly about receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, with reports indicating he had the opportunity to more than double his already enormous salary with a move to the Middle East. Ultimately, though, he rejected it and pledged his future to the Red Devils for at least another season.
When asked how he managed to resist the financial temptation, Fernandes acknowledged that an honest conversation with his wife helped clarify what truly mattered to him.
"I stayed because I believed I still had something to give back to this club," Fernandes told The Wayne Rooney Show.
"Obviously the Saudi situation, with the money ... there was a lot. The great thing about my family is that my wife is just as grounded as I am.
"We're very conscious that we don't need to be the wealthiest people in the world. We simply want to be people who have fulfilled their dreams and live a comfortable life with their children while striving to be as successful as possible.
"My wife's words were something like, 'have you achieved your dreams? Have you accomplished everything you set out to do?'
"And that simple thing she said made me realize she sees things exactly the way I do. Let's keep pushing and see where this journey leads."
He continued: "I didn't want to walk away from the club at a time when we were going through difficulties."
Could Fernandes Leave Man Utd This Summer?

Earlier this campaign, when United were struggling under Ruben Amorim, there was widespread speculation that the Red Devils would look to sell their star man to finance a squad overhaul. While Fernandes has never concealed his wish to remain, he has acknowledged he would reluctantly depart if the club requested it.
Now, however, United are no longer in turmoil. Revitalized under Michael Carrick, the side has climbed to third in the Premier League standings. They may not yet be genuine title contenders, but for the first time in years, United no longer resembles a club in decline.
Would Fernandes be willing to leave United in their current form? Possibly, but he did drop a telling hint that an exit is far from his mind right now.
"I want to win the Premier League," he said. "I want to win the Champions League. I've never shied away from saying that."
Fernandes's future could well depend on United's plans in the transfer market. While things are progressing positively, a costly squad rebuild remains necessary, and the prospect of cashing in on Fernandes to generate the required funds may be too appealing for United to pass up.
Should United choose to sell their key man, they would need to have a top-class replacement secured beforehand. Fernandes remains among the finest players in the Premier League, if not globally, and is on course to break the Premier League's celebrated assist record — needing just three more from five games remaining.
That level of contribution could ultimately prove far more valuable than any transfer fee received.
