Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes dismissed "lies" suggesting he and Michael Carrick had resolved their differences, revealing the surprising truth that there had been zero communication between the manager and a captain who remains focused on "winning every f---ing game."
Fernandes's turbulent recent weeks were encapsulated in a dramatic 90-minute encounter against Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening. Following a dreadful first half in which United were fortunate to trail by only 2–0, the Red Devils captain sparked a stunning comeback with a retaken penalty before Matheus Cunha's two goals in three minutes sealed an improbable 3–2 victory.
Buoyed by the end of United's wretched nine-game winless run, Fernandes used his post-match interview not to criticize his manager or any technical directors, but to address inaccurate media coverage.
Fernandes's Mixed Man Utd Fortunes
"It's been difficult, there's been a lot of speculation in the media," the Portuguese midfielder told Amazon Prime Video. "A lot of lies surrounding many things that have happened at this club, between me and the manager, like that we have cleared the air. Nothing of that sort happened. The manager made the decision to put me on the bench because I wasn't performing well. And that's fair."
Fernandes had openly criticized Carrick's instruction to avoid pressing Como in a humiliating 4–1 defeat—an instruction he disregarded, to the team's overall detriment—and subsequently watched from the bench as his teammates fell 3–0 to Bournemouth. Despite the pointed remarks, Carrick consistently maintained that Fernandes's omission was purely a sporting call. The captain accepted the decision, though appeared to have received no further explanation for it.
"Everyone felt like that was a punishment for the words I had [after Como]. And if it was, it was right," Fernandes added, suggesting that no conversations had taken place whatsoever—air cleared or otherwise—which raises an entirely new set of concerns.
"The manager makes the decisions. I have to accept it. I have to move forward with that. It doesn't change the belief I have in the manager, the staff and every player at this club. And it doesn't change my aim to win every f---ing game that I have ahead of me."
'Save Anyone's Job'—Fernandes Takes Firm Stance on Carrick Future

United's grim run of results had left Carrick in a precarious position heading into the Champions League fixture. Partly due to a lack of alignment among the club's decision-makers, the popular manager had been handed at least two additional games in charge.
When it was suggested to Fernandes that he and his teammates had rescued Carrick's position with the victory, the midfielder swiftly pushed back on that notion. "We don't need to save anyone's job," Fernandes said bluntly. "The club needed that win. The players needed that win. It is something we needed as a group of players and staff. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation together."
United face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday before club football pauses for a two-week international break. That extended hiatus had been identified as the ideal window for a new manager to be brought in, but it now remains unclear whether this win over Roma will postpone a decision that still seems unavoidable.
