Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimarães was more than happy to fire back at jeers from Sunderland supporters after netting his first goal for the Gunners on Saturday.
Guimarães broke the deadlock in Saturday's 2–0 victory over Sunderland just before the hour mark, using his celebration to direct a series of gestures at the Black Cats faithful, including cupping his ears in response to their boos and pinching his fingers to imply Sunderland are a small club.
Those moments were then shared in an Instagram post following the final whistle, with Guimarães also addressing pre-match taunts from Sunderland fans who had called the midfielder, a former player of bitter rivals Newcastle United, a "fat rat" as he arrived at the ground.
"The fat rat wishes you a nice weekend," Guimarães wrote, alongside a nod to his small club gesture: "They know what they are."
Arteta: A Special Game for Guimarães
A trip to Sunderland is, with no disrespect intended, hardly the most marquee fixture on any Arsenal player's schedule, yet it is a match that has carried enormous personal significance for Guimarães throughout his time at Newcastle.
Last season, Sunderland swept both league meetings against Newcastle. Guimarães played the full 90 minutes of a 1–0 defeat at the Stadium of Light in December 2025 before being ruled out of the return fixture, a 2–1 loss, through injury. As Newcastle's captain that season, those outcomes would have stung the Brazilian deeply.
Finally getting a measure of revenge, Guimarães's composure and quality in such a hostile atmosphere earned high praise from manager Mikel Arteta.
"Unbelievable, but again the personality that he has, and this was a special game for him as well, what it means for him," Arteta reflected after the final whistle.
