Carrick Hands Bruno Fernandes the Captaincy Armband in Desperate Bid to Save His Job

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will continue to wear the captain's armband, despite the friction between the pair over the past week.

Fernandes was left out of the starting lineup over the weekend during the Red Devils' dismal 3–0 home loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, following his eyebrow-raising outburst in Como. The Portuguese midfielder publicly criticized the team's approach after their Champions League embarrassment, drawing a sharp rebuttal from Carrick during his own post-match press conference.

The English manager then kept Fernandes, his most creative midfielder, on the bench for the entire match against the Cherries. United went on to stretch their winless streak to eight games across all competitions, piling further pressure on Carrick's position.

He continues to hold the reins—at least for now—and is pressing ahead with preparations for the club's upcoming fixture against Chelsea on Saturday. When asked whether Fernandes would retain the captaincy, Carrick gave a clear and unambiguous answer.

"There is no decision to be made on [the captaincy]," Carrick said. "It will be Bruno. Listen, we're clear with the situation of the team and as a football club at the moment. He's an important player for this group. He has been and he will be.

"Between us, we've got to make a difference and we've got to push things in a good direction. He's fully committed to this football club. He's fully committed to making things better. It doesn't change for me. He's the one that's kind of led the team so well for many a game and many a year, and he'll continue to do that."
