Chelsea Stunned as Key Starter Suffers Horrific Head Injury in Everton Clash

Chelsea are anxiously awaiting news on the condition of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez after he was carried off on a stretcher during the match against Everton following a head injury.

With approximately 20 minutes remaining, Martínez rushed out to collect an Everton free kick, only to suffer a sickening head-on collision with Toffees center back Jarrad Branthwaite.

Branthwaite was able to sit up shortly afterwards, but there was immediate alarm for Martínez, as medical personnel sprinted onto the field to attend to Chelsea's keeper, who was visibly in distress on the ground.

Following extensive on-field treatment, Martínez was stretchered off and taken directly to hospital for scans on the injury. As he was carried from the pitch, he appeared to have movement in his arms.

Stepping in as his replacement was youngster Mike Penders. The 21-year-old became the youngest goalkeeper to feature for Chelsea in Premier League history, in what club officials anticipate will be the first of many appearances in the seasons ahead.

When Will Martínez Return for Chelsea?

Chelsea will require a formal diagnosis of Martínez's injury before they can begin to map out any kind of return timeline for the goalkeeper, though it would be a major shock to see him back on the pitch before the end of the month at the earliest.

Naturally, anything more serious could prolong his time on the sidelines considerably, with Chelsea now awaiting the scan results to determine exactly how to move forward.

Xabi Alonso could find himself without his first-choice goalkeeper for several important fixtures. A home clash against Tottenham Hotspur is scheduled for next weekend, followed by a Carabao Cup tie with Liverpool, a game Martínez may have been rested for regardless.

October wraps up with a home fixture against Manchester United, before a trip to Sunderland sends Chelsea into the November international break.

Any prolonged absence for Martínez would hand Penders an extended run in the starting lineup. The tall 21-year-old made a strong impression on loan at Strasbourg last season, and Chelsea chose not to send him out on loan again this term, preferring to retain him as backup competition for Martínez.

Penders has started both of Chelsea's Carabao Cup matches to date. Following his debut — a 2–0 victory over Luton Town in the second round — Alonso reassured supporters that the Belgian will soon play a significant role.

"Speaking about Mike, he will definitely have games with more to do," Alonso said. "You could see at certain moments he was under pressure and remained composed. He has confidence in his game.

"He wasn't called upon for many saves, but he's a tremendous prospect for both the future and the present."
