Christian Pulisic's Future Hangs in the Balance as AC Milan's Sweeping Overhaul Sparks 'Unequivocal Failure' Alarm

Christian Pulisic's Future Hangs in the Balance as AC Milan's Sweeping Overhaul Sparks 'Unequivocal Failure' Alarm

AC Milan have dismissed four top executives following a deeply disappointing Serie A season that saw the club fail to secure a spot in next year's Champions League.

The Rossoneri wrapped up the campaign in fifth place in Serie A, overtaken by Como on the final matchday. While few players in the squad can take pride in their performances, Milan's struggles were perhaps best illustrated by Christian Pulisic's inability to find the net consistently. The USMNT attacker finished the season with eight goals—second only to Rafael Leão in the club's scoring charts—but has gone without a goal throughout 2026.

RedBird, Milan's ownership group, moved swiftly to make sweeping changes less than 24 hours after the final whistle.

"For the bulk of this season, we occupied the top two spots in Serie A, with a genuine chance of challenging for the Scudetto," a club statement said. "The closing stages were entirely at odds with what had come before, with [Sunday] night's deflating defeat in the final fixture rendering the season an undeniable failure.

"The time has come for change and a thorough restructuring of football operations. With immediate effect, we are parting ways with CEO Giorgio Furlani, Sporting Director Igli Tare, Head Coach Massimiliano Allegri and Technical Director Geoffrey Moncada.  We extend our gratitude to each of them for their commitment and efforts on behalf of AC Milan throughout their respective tenures.

"Further announcements regarding upcoming appointments will follow in due course—with the aim of being fully prepared and ready for the season ahead."

Is Christian Pulisic's Future at AC Milan in Danger?

It is crystal clear that RedBird officials were far from satisfied with Milan's showing this season. Sacking the manager is the typical reaction to such underperformance, but extending the cull to senior leadership signals a conviction that deep-rooted problems exist throughout the entire organization.

With CEO Furlani and directors Tare and Moncada departing alongside manager Allegri, this shapes up to be a transformative summer for Milan—one that will trigger significant changes at every level of the club, including within the playing squad.

Should RedBird conclude that the current roster is part of the problem, a mass clearout could follow, while certain players may need to be offloaded regardless to offset the financial impact of another season without Champions League revenue. In either scenario, few players would command the kind of transfer fee that Pulisic's departure could generate.

Pulisic has been at Milan since the summer of 2023, performing at a higher level than he managed during his time at Chelsea, though inconsistency has remained an issue. Across 134 appearances, the American has contributed 42 goals and 27 assists.

The statistics are respectable, but far from outstanding, and it seems entirely plausible that Milan could look to upgrade in the summer transfer window, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Pulisic's contract.

The American has just one year left on his current deal, though an automatic 12-month extension clause exists. Clubs typically make decisive calls on players entering the final two years of their contracts, meaning this summer could prove to be a pivotal moment for Pulisic's future at the club.

On the positive side for Pulisic, there are other players who could be sold if the motivation is purely financial. Leão's chapter at Milan appears to be drawing to a close, while centre-back Strahinja Pavlović and goalkeeper Mike Maignan have also attracted outside interest.
