Tottenham Hotspur's dreadful start to the campaign hit a new low on Saturday as a loss to Aston Villa saw them reach an unwanted milestone.
Spurs finally broke their painful drought for a first Premier League goal of the season, even netting twice on home turf, but late consolation efforts proved completely meaningless in their stunning 3–2 defeat.
It was yet another wasteful display in attack from Roberto De Zerbi's squad, who were also made to pay for their sloppy defending. They have now managed just two points this season despite splashing £302 million ($424 million) on new signings over the summer.
To twist the knife further into Tottenham's wounds, a troubling statistic has gone viral following their latest loss—and it's one that will bring a smile to the faces of their north London rivals, Arsenal.
According to Opta, the Lilywhites have now suffered 50 defeats in their 141 Premier League matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since its opening in April 2019, matching the exact number of losses Arsenal have endured at the Emirates Stadium across their 382 top-flight games since departing Highbury back in July 2006.
Following yet another bitter disappointment, Tottenham have now won just five of their last 36 home fixtures across all competitions, with only two of those victories coming under De Zerbi's management.
Arsenal Mimic Tottenham With Bruising Weekend Defeat
Arsenal's delight over another setback for their neighbors was quickly extinguished as the reigning Premier League champions went on to suffer their own first defeat of the season just hours later.
"Are you Tottenham in disguise?" chanted Brighton & Hove Albion fans at the Amex Stadium, as they witnessed their team dismantle the Gunners 3–0 with a superb display.
Arsenal's usually rock-solid defense was carved apart time and again by the Seagulls, who pressed their opponents into errors from the opening whistle. Just as Mikel Arteta's side had begun to look unstoppable during their flawless start to the season, they produced one of their most underwhelming performances in recent memory.
Before heading to the south coast, Arsenal had conceded just one Premier League goal all season. They made the journey back to the capital thoroughly humbled.
The defeat represented their first loss by three or more goals since April 2023, when they were similarly beaten 3–0 by Brighton. It brought a decisive end to their run of nine consecutive Premier League wins.
The current Premier League season has already delivered plenty of drama and surprises. Tottenham's dismal defeat came as little shock. Arsenal's humbling performance, however, certainly did.
