Hull City secured their spot in the Premier League with a 1–0 Championship playoff final win over Middlesbrough, settled by Oli McBurnie's stoppage-time strike, bringing a dramatic end to the most controversial and bitter post-season in the history of English football's second division.
The typically nerve-wracking clash at Wembley Stadium to determine who would join Coventry City and Ipswich Town in earning promotion to the top flight was overshadowed by the ongoing 'Spygate' controversy.
Had Southampton's analyst intern William Salt not been caught filming Middlesbrough's training session from behind a pine tree, it would have been the Saints facing Hull in the Championship's marquee fixture. However, the poorly hidden "spy" was caught by furious Boro staff, leading Southampton to admit that this was not the first act of espionage authorized by manager Tonda Eckert.
Even without the footage recorded on Salt's phone, Southampton still managed to advance across both legs of their playoff semifinal against Middlesbrough. However, a landmark ruling from the English Football League (EFL) shockingly removed the Saints from the final and reinstated Boro in their place.
"We can say everything is unfair in this last two weeks," Hull manager Sergej Jakirović sighed on the eve of the final. His faith in the fairness of the universe must have been rewarded at Wembley.
Timeline of 'Spygate' Scandal

Championship playoff finals are almost always closely contested. Only one match over the past ten years has been settled by more than a single goal—and Brentford's 2–0 triumph over Swansea City in 2021 was helped along by Jay Fulton's red card in the 65th minute.
Middlesbrough's supporters had warmed up early, descending on London's Trafalgar Square the day before Saturday's showpiece event. Yet, they had to wait until the 61st minute for the game's opening shot on target. Beyond the swirling controversy surrounding surveillance, oppressively hot weather did little to help the flow of a sluggish encounter.
Ultimately, McBurnie's late scramble in the 95th minute, pouncing on a poor clearance from Solomon Brynn attempting to deal with a cross, was all Hull required. In securing a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, the Tigers brought this turbulent playoff campaign to a close without resorting to any legal proceedings.
2026–27 Premier League Lineup

Retained Teams
Promoted Teams
Still to Be Decided
After 10 months, 370 matches and 1,021 goals, the final Premier League table has yet to be confirmed. London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are the last two clubs battling for top-flight survival with just 90 minutes remaining.
While many of the capital's residents may be tempted to back the Hammers, it is Spurs who hold their own destiny. Avoid defeat at home to Everton on Sunday and the club's uninterrupted Premier League status will be secured for another season, regardless of West Ham's result against Leeds United. However, Tottenham have managed just a single victory at N17 since the opening weekend of the campaign.
Much like Saturday's playoff final, the Premier League season finale promises to be a fiercely tight and tense occasion.
