Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson is set to be one of the most talked-about players in the upcoming transfer window.
The England international has attracted attention from virtually every top club across Europe ahead of a summer expected to be dominated by midfield activity. Within the Premier League, Manchester City and Manchester United are believed to be the frontrunners in the race for his signature.

"Manchester City have already initiated talks with the player's representatives, but Manchester United remain in discussions for Elliot Anderson," Fabrizio Romano disclosed. "Manchester United are not walking away.
"They are aware that Manchester City launched their pursuit of the player well in advance, but until a deal is officially completed, Man Utd intend to stay involved. Man Utd want to make their move, and they believe that the potential to offer Champions League football could be a decisive factor in closing the gap on Manchester City in this pursuit.
"But the key factor will be the negotiation with Nottingham Forest, and who is willing to meet their asking price."
With a transfer fee of approximately $135 million (£100 million) anticipated, which destination makes the most sense for the midfielder?
Man Utd or Man City?
Just a few months ago, this would barely have been a contest. United were in turmoil under former boss Ruben Amorim, fielding a midfield pairing that was being dismantled week after week within an increasingly disorganized setup.
Since Michael Carrick's arrival, however, the picture has shifted considerably. The Red Devils look rejuvenated, once again projecting the kind of appeal that the United name once carried. With Champions League qualification nearly secured, the two clubs are now on more equal footing.
United are prepared to make midfield reinforcement their top priority this summer. The imminent departure of Casemiro, combined with a probable exit for Manuel Ugarte, leaves a significant void in the center of the pitch at Old Trafford, where Kobbie Mainoo may be the only established senior player to stay.
The Red Devils can therefore offer Anderson a guaranteed place in the starting eleven should he choose to sign. Regular minutes in both the Premier League and Champions League would be assured, along with a prominent role as the centerpiece of United's English contingent. While the club has endured turbulent times in recent seasons, the appeal of that opportunity for any English player is undeniable.
City cannot match that historical prestige, nor can they promise a guaranteed starting berth in a squad packed with talent, but they do boast a far stronger recent track record of winning.
Despite what has undoubtedly been a difficult campaign for City, they remain on course for a domestic treble. The Carabao Cup is already secured, a place in the FA Cup semifinal has been earned, and the Cityzens are now firmly in contention to wrestle the Premier League title from Arsenal's grasp.
Silverware is almost a certainty at City, who are also consistent participants in the Champions League. United are not currently in a position to offer the same guarantees.
Managerial Questions Remain
The biggest obstacle for United continues to be the uncertainty surrounding the managerial position. Anderson will understand that such a significant career decision cannot be made without clarity on who will be in charge, their tactical approach, and their plans for him specifically.
Interestingly, City's ability to provide those same assurances is also somewhat unclear. Pep Guardiola's contract extends to the summer of 2027, yet speculation about a potential early exit has been circulating persistently.
Anderson would likely be drawn to the idea of working under Guardiola, a manager who has helped develop some of the finest midfielders of the last two decades, though whether that opportunity would actually materialize remains uncertain.
Carrick may not carry the same managerial pedigree as Guardiola, but he does hold one distinct advantage. Like Carrick himself, Anderson developed his game at the renowned Wallsend Boys Club, with both men sharing proud Tyneside roots.
With other clubs still weighing up potential moves—Chelsea and Liverpool have both been mentioned as interested parties—Anderson would be prudent to assess all available options, though a move to Manchester appears most attractive given the current trajectory of the season.
Anderson will seek firm assurances as he prepares for a transfer that could shape the entire arc of his career. The 23-year-old stands at a crossroads, facing either a path toward lasting impact at the highest level or the risk of becoming one of the Premier League's most notable underachievers.
