European Giants Keep Liverpool on Edge as Rio Ngumoha Contract Negotiations Heat Up

Liverpool's efforts to secure young winger Rio Ngumoha on a new deal could be hampered by persistent interest from Bayern Munich, according to a new report.

The 18-year-old, who made the move from Chelsea in 2024, had a standout breakthrough season and has continued to feature under new boss Andoni Iraola, despite facing increased competition following the summer arrivals of Bradley Barcola and Víctor Muñoz.

It came to light last month that Bayern had attempted to sign Ngumoha during the most recent summer window. Reports indicated the Bundesliga heavyweights were willing to spend approximately £60 million ($80 million), only to be firmly told the player was unavailable.

Since then, Ngumoha has acknowledged that his agent is in contract renewal discussions with Liverpool, but Christian Falk reports that the winger's camp is simultaneously holding talks with Bayern as well.

It is believed that Ngumoha could resurface as a priority transfer target for Bayern at the season's end, with the German club — who also pursued Barcola before his move to Anfield — remaining convinced he would be a valuable addition to their squad.

What Does the Future Hold for Ngumoha?

Ngumoha faces a number of significant decisions to weigh up regarding his next career step.

With his current deal running until the summer of 2028, he holds considerable leverage in negotiations. Ngumoha appears settled at Liverpool and is clearly open to signing an extension, though he will need to assess whether he is comfortable battling Barcola, Muñoz, and Cody Gakpo for playing time.

The competition would be equally intense at Bayern, where Luis Díaz has thrived since departing Liverpool — registering 31 goals and 24 assists across 62 matches — but, as he approaches his 30th birthday, Bayern have made no secret of their desire to find a long-term replacement. Their summer pursuits of both Barcola and Ngumoha are testament to that.

Bayern have an impressive track record of nurturing young talent. Jamal Musiala became the club's youngest-ever Bundesliga player when he made his debut in June 2020 at just 17, while 18-year-old Lennart Karl has already contributed 11 goals and 10 assists across 53 appearances for the side.

Ngumoha may feel he has a better chance of regular starts at Bayern than at Liverpool, though he is far from a peripheral figure under Iraola. His tally of 628 minutes across 13 appearances actually surpasses what Karl has managed — 517 minutes — in the same number of games at Bayern this season.

Both clubs can present compelling cases to Ngumoha, who must now determine whether to commit his future to Liverpool or pursue a lucrative switch to Bayern. Should he enter the market, further interested parties are likely to emerge as well.
