Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel has announced his decision to join Real Madrid instead of Barcelona as his next club.
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder, widely regarded as one of Europe's finest talents in his age bracket, expressed his wish to depart in September, citing concerns over a lack of a clear pathway to the first team. Despite United's efforts to retain him, top clubs across the continent lined up to secure his signature.
A switch to La Liga quickly became the frontrunner for Gabriel, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid competing fiercely for his services, but it is Los Blancos who have ultimately prevailed.
MARCA spoke with Gabriel in Madrid, where he has been training with a personal coach while the finer details of his upcoming move to the Bernabéu are being finalized.
When asked why he preferred Madrid over Barcelona, Gabriel's expression reportedly said it all, with the publication suggesting his face conveyed the words: "Obviously, Madrid."
Why Is Gabriel Joining Real Madrid?

When news of his intended departure surfaced, Gabriel and his family were said to have become increasingly frustrated with United's reluctance to fast-track his integration into Michael Carrick's senior setup. It later came to light that he had likely been on the verge of making his senior debut just days after submitting his transfer request.
While some players might opt to step down a level, build their reputation away from the limelight and pursue a high-profile move later in their career, Gabriel and his camp have aimed straight for the top. At no stage was anything short of a move to one of Europe's elite clubs ever considered.
It is clear that Gabriel believes he will have greater opportunities to feature in the first team at the Bernabéu than at Old Trafford, and one can reasonably assume he has been given such guarantees during talks with Los Blancos.
Gabriel will initially feature for Real Madrid Castilla, the club's reserve team that competes in the Spanish third tier, but he is anticipated to be given chances in both La Liga and the Champions League once his transfer to the Spanish capital is officially confirmed.
The Biggest Frustration for Man Utd

Not only are United set to lose arguably the most talented player in their academy, but they will also receive minimal financial compensation in return.
Had Gabriel moved to another English club, United would have been entitled to a substantial fee, determined by a tribunal if the clubs could not agree on a figure. The record compensation in such cases remains the £8 million ($11.7 million at the time) Liverpool paid for Danny Ings back in 2016.
Regrettably for United, Gabriel's move abroad means no such compensation applies.
Real Madrid are only obligated to comply with "FIFA training compensation" regulations, which are intended to ensure clubs that develop young players receive some reimbursement for their investment. As a result, Gabriel's transfer is expected to cost Madrid no more than $400,000.
While that figure is considerable in most walks of life, in elite football it amounts to little more than loose change. In fact, United are thought to have at least two players earning that sum or more on a weekly basis: Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
For a player United believe could one day command a fee of up to £100 million ($133.7 million), it is easy to understand why the Red Devils are deeply disheartened to be losing Gabriel in such circumstances.
