Julián Alvarez continues to top Barcelona's transfer wishlist, but the reigning back-to-back La Liga champions are reportedly holding out for the player to pressure Atlético Madrid into sanctioning his "dream" move — one he risks being "deceived" out of.
Barça are seeking one final major addition in attack following the departure of veteran Robert Lewandowski to the Chicago Fire. The club has already brought in Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon, yet failing to secure another forward would be a missed opportunity, particularly with Ferran Torres's future still up in the air.
Alvarez has been the central target throughout the summer window, but Atléti have no desire to sell him to a domestic competitor. Barça have already seen a €100 million ($114 million) offer rejected, while Real Madrid's €150 million ($171 million) proposal was similarly turned away.
The striker is believed to be eager to seal a move to Catalonia, and Barça are holding out for the 26-year-old to apply pressure on Atléti.
Barcelona Waiting for Julián Alvarez to Make His Move
Alvarez is currently on a post-World Cup vacation after Argentina finished as runners-up in their title defense. Lionel Scaloni's side were beaten 1–0 by a deserving Spain, with Barça's Torres netting the decisive goal in extra time.
The 2022 champion didn't enjoy the individual tournament he had hoped for, with an ankle injury hampering his rhythm. Nevertheless, his sole goal was a memorable one — a curling long-range effort in extra time of Argentina's quarterfinal clash against Switzerland.
Prior to that, the striker made clear his desire to "fulfil his dream" and exit the Spanish capital. Without directly naming Barcelona, widespread reports indicated they were the club he had in mind. However, his remarks following Argentina's group-stage victory over Austria weren't sufficient to shift Atléti's firm stance.
According to Sport, Alvarez intends to address his current club directly and make a second public statement in an effort to push through a transfer. He reportedly feels "deceived" by Atléti, who allegedly assured him he could leave if a reasonable offer was submitted.
Barcelona continue to wait, with their $114 million bid set to expire at the end of July. Reports suggest they may increase their offer to €130 million ($148 million) to further challenge Atléti's resistance.
No Alternative Destinations on the Table for Julián Alvarez
For Alvarez this summer, it's Barcelona or nothing.
The same Sport report highlights the forward's deep-rooted attachment to Barça, fueled by childhood idol and fellow Argentine Lionel Messi. Alvarez grew up donning Blaugrana colors on the streets of Calchín, making this far more than a passing ambition.
Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also been loosely linked, with the former reportedly exploring a swap deal involving Viktor Gyökeres moving the other way. However, that potential arrangement never gained traction, and the Gunners are now pursuing a bold move for Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior to overhaul their attack.
Unless he completely burns his bridges with Atléti in the weeks ahead, Alvarez looks set to remain in Spain for the 2026–27 campaign. Whether that's at his current club or his dream destination appears to hinge entirely on his ability to force the issue.
