FIFA President Backs Trump's World Cup Trophy Ambitions: 'It Could Happen!'

FIFA President Backs Trump's World Cup Trophy Ambitions: 'It Could Happen!'

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that President Trump will participate in the trophy presentation following the 2026 World Cup final, noting that this has long been standard practice for soccer's premier global event.

Infantino's close ties with President Trump are well-documented and have drawn considerable attention, particularly earlier in the tournament when he reached out to address the red card issued to USMNT forward Folarin Balogun, a decision that was later overturned.

"We're in regular contact," Infantino told blue Sport. "Almost daily—he's enthusiastic and genuinely enjoying the tournament. He watches all the matches on television."

Trump notably took part in the trophy ceremony for Chelsea's 2025 Club World Cup triumph last summer, staying on stage as the Blues celebrated with their prize, and he is set to feature in this year's ceremony as well.

Rather than being a personal gesture between two acquaintances, however, Trump's involvement will follow the established tradition of the host nation's leader taking part in the proceedings.

"Hopefully we'll present the trophy together at the final," he confirmed. "That's always been the intention—and that's how it has always worked historically—for the president of the country hosting the final to present the trophy alongside the FIFA president."

Despite his frequent visibility during the tournament's lead-up, Trump has yet to appear in the stands at any games so far, with Infantino confirming he follows most of the action from home on TV.

When asked whether security considerations have contributed to Trump's continued absence, Infantino insisted: "No, no. I imagine he still has a few other matters to attend to.

"If he were at the stadium, people would ask, 'What's he doing there when there's so much happening in the world?'"

"I'm in constant contact with him and his administration, which is doing an excellent job in support of the World Cup."

With the USMNT now eliminated from the competition, President Trump's first public appearance this summer could well come at the World Cup final, scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New York City on July 19.

"We will be together with the President, enjoying the final and presenting the trophy to the winner, naturally, together," Infantino said earlier this summer. "We are together all the time."
