FIFA president Gianni Infantino finds himself in hot water once more after a leaked letter surfaced in which he commended the "professionalism" of the Argentine national team following the World Cup final.
Argentina's showing in the marquee clash against Spain was notably disappointing — they failed to register a single shot on target within 90 minutes, had Enzo Fernández dismissed with an unnecessary red card, and the match concluded with a pitch-side brawl that is currently under FIFA investigation.
Despite the manner of Argentina's loss, Infantino struck a remarkably upbeat tone and heaped praise on the side in a letter addressed to Argentine Federation president Claudio Tapia.
"I wish to express once more my most heartfelt congratulations on this significant new achievement for Argentine football," Infantino wrote in the letter, which was leaked in Argentina and later verified by the Daily Mail.
"The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be remembered as an unforgettable celebration of the beautiful game, defined by breathtaking matches, the emergence of exciting new talents, the presence of the sport's greatest icons, and the extraordinary atmosphere generated by packed stadiums.
"The outstanding performance of the Albiceleste also played a decisive role in making this edition a truly exceptional event that captivated football lovers across the globe.
"Please convey my warmest congratulations to all those who contributed to this remarkable result: the players, head coach Lionel Scaloni, the coaching and medical staff, and of course the countless supporters who stood by and cheered on the team throughout the tournament.
"These triumphs are always the product of relentless effort, professionalism and meticulous attention to detail, as well as passion, dedication and a deep love for this wonderful sport. All of this bodes well for a very bright future and will undoubtedly lay the groundwork for further great achievements in Argentine football.
