U.S. men's national team forward Folarin Balogun has been cleared to feature in the World Cup round of 16 clash against Belgium on Monday evening.
The stunning development, triggered by FIFA's last-minute decision to suspend Balogun's round of 32 red card on a one-year probationary basis, has sparked a wave of intense reactions — from jubilation among American supporters to outrage from the Belgian football federation. But what exactly happened?
It isn't simply FIFA's unusual — and rather ambiguous — overturning of a red card just one day before kickoff, nor President Donald Trump's role in the affair, that has sent the internet into a frenzy. It is also Balogun's undeniable ability to alter the outcome of the game and propel the U.S. into a historic quarterfinal berth.
In his World Cup debut, the 25-year-old has swiftly cemented himself as the USMNT's wildcard, all while capturing the hearts of fans across America. Here's why Balogun's return is such a significant development for the USMNT.

Presence in the Final Third

Balogun has found the net three times this summer across as many appearances. Simply put, he is remarkably reliable in front of goal — a quality he carried directly from his club campaign, where he netted 19 goals in 43 matches for French outfit AS Monaco, including eight in a row this past spring.
Beyond consistency, Balogun is ruthlessly clinical. He managed just four shots against Bosnia and Herzegovina last week and still converted. In the World Cup opener against Paraguay, he took only five shots and scored twice. He wastes very few opportunities.
In both of those matches, his goals came shortly after he had already put the ball in the net, only to be flagged for offside. This reveals three things: first, though eager, he could stand to be more disciplined with his positioning; second, and more crucially, he builds momentum and then capitalizes on it; and third, he carries a fierce competitive edge. All vital qualities in a lead striker.
The forward also does what every elite striker must: cause chaos. Standing at 5'10", he was physically imposing against Australia and Bosnia's towering center backs as though he himself stood well above six feet. He frustrates — and ultimately wears down — defenders through his explosive movement and willingness to use his body. In fact, he irritated Australian 6'6" center back Harry Souttar to such a degree that Souttar literally wrapped his long arms around Balogun's torso — nearly twice over — just to remove him from the play. A similar physical battle against Bosnia's 6'2" center back Tarik Muharemovic ultimately led to Balogun receiving the contentious red card.
Balogun should certainly be mindful of putting opponents at risk, but his physicality, broadly speaking, is something worth embracing.
Belgium Unprepared, USMNT Fired Up

The news of FIFA's red card reversal broke just over 24 hours before Belgium and the USMNT are set to take the field.
Following the referee's original ruling on Wednesday to ban Balogun for one match, the Red Devils had more than three full days to tactically game-plan against what they understood would be a Balogun-free opponent.
They likely expected to face Balogun's understudy, Ricardo Pepi, who, while still a capable player, is less consistent in front of goal and is also noted for his defensive limitations. Belgium may have also made tactical and selection decisions based on the assumption that the U.S. would be missing its key striker. If so, all of that preparation has now been rendered useless.
The USMNT, meanwhile, can seamlessly revert to the 4-2-3-1 setup that delivered results against Bosnia, or opt to shift into a 3-5-2 formation. Balogun is equally comfortable in either system, and the squad has already utilized both this summer.

Beyond pre-match tactics, the sudden reversal could unsettle Belgium's players and pull their focus away from the game itself. FIFA's ruling has clearly enraged the Royal Belgian Football Association, which released a strongly worded official statement saying it was "astonished" by the decision.
For the USMNT players, however, the news has only added fuel to the fire ahead of the contest. "Just super excited obviously," star winger Christian Pulisic said upon hearing the news. "Just happy for him. He deserves to be here, and he's had such a good tournament. After such a harsh ruling, it is just great to have him back."
