How Morocco Edged Out Brazil for Group C Glory Despite Opening Stalemate

Brazil and Morocco shared the spotlight on day three of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing out a 1–1 stalemate at MetLife Stadium in a contest that could prove decisive in the Group C standings.

Morocco forward Ismael Saibari broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, delicately chipping home an exquisite through ball from Brahim Díaz that sliced between center backs Marquinhos and Gabriel. Brazil star Vinicius Junior wasted no time firing back with a powerful strike of his own, drawing the hosts level in the 32nd minute.

The second half failed to match the excitement of the first. Frequent fouls from both teams interrupted the flow of play, and some deliberate time-wasting from the Atlas Lions drained the energy from the contest.

At the final whistle, both sides had to settle for a point in what will almost certainly be their most challenging fixture in Group C, which also features Haiti and Scotland. Despite being equal on points and goal difference, Morocco claimed top spot in the group for one notable reason.

Why Morocco Sits Atop Group C Over Brazil

Ismael Saibari

Morocco climbed to the top of Group C following Saturday's draw on the strength of fewer yellow cards than Brazil. Remarkably, not one Moroccan player was booked on the day despite the side committing 14 fouls.

Brazil, meanwhile, had right back Roger Ibañez and midfielder Casemiro both cautioned in the opening half. Carlo Ancelotti substituted both players at the break, a decision likely influenced in part by their bookings.

The disparity in disciplinary records between the two sides is now what separates them in the standings. As the group stage progresses, goal difference will likely become the ultimate tiebreaker for Brazil and Morocco should both nations finish level on points.

Brazil's next assignment is a clash with Haiti on Friday, while Morocco takes on Scotland on the same day.
